February 8, 2009 at 2:02 AMWow;what a great episode.There was so much packed into this I liked ,yet nothing overwhelming.Nicely introduced making it relevant to current times and personal,Connies voice and the tones were so beautiful and musical [and perfect background music enhanced it further] and I love the slow pace which is,in my mind,just how such a reflective poem should be read.There was also the parallelism and contrasts and the fascinating reference to reconstructing ancient Chinese based on meter and rhyme in poetry.And what a great choice of poem;so touching.Thanks Pete[and Connie] for all this but also for pointing out the WYWNU.
The 8 immortals of the wine cup sound like a fun bunch.What a great name.I found some interesting references here and here and here is how they are commonly portrayed in Chinese art:
Is this a HK gangster movie with a 老大？
Is the title something to do with a teacher loving a gangster or something?
It is interesting how similar 小 and 少 are in pronuciation,meaning,and character.I'm wondering about the differences and their significance.
Finally,how does this saying go in Chinese?:
Things last but people don't.[Very true if there are a lot of 老大 around]

I think I've only ever met one person from Mongolia but I have met many who have travelled there and by all accounts had a wonderful time.

Interesting,but I always think the devils in the detail.To really make an interpretation,one would have to know exactly how the survey was carried out and evaluated.I wonder to what extent a sense of freedom of speech may have impacted on the figures too.

出去吃 in the expansion to distinguish it from the not too dissimilar sounding 出租车。Also interesting to hear chu1 immediately preceed qu4.I can't hear much difference between ch and q,but I presume there is a subtle difference.I better hit the pronunciation guide sometime to see if that helps point out the diff.

Sorry mate.I was away when this N&F podcast came out and missed your above post with the video of the Talking Parrot saying "Gong Xi Fa Cai" which I subsequently posted in another thread.I have just discovered this now.Quite ironic that the coming weeks lessons include one on plagiarism.I would delete my entry if I could ,but hopefully it's no biggie to you :)
