Bill,

Thanks for your reply.Interesting.I'd love to try it now.I wonder if it's available outside Mexico and Southern US ?

Irmapico,

Thanks for the word nopales.I see that they are taken from the young stem of prickly pear.I'll have to look out for that ingredient next time I'm at a Mexican restaurant, but I'm not too optimistic here in Oz.I see they can be bottled, canned or dried too so perhaps I should check the International section of the supermarket. Are they the only cacti that are eaten?

everett,

Thanks for sharing that great story.I like the way you expressed it esp life vs saving face. You did great mate to convey your message in the heat of the moment.I don't think in the heat of the moment I'd come out with anything more explicit than 不 or 别.

I meant to add I suppose you could just call the legal black taxis something like:

黑色的出租车

as opposed to the 黑车 for the illegal ones, but I have no idea if this is right or not or whether you have to rely on context

John,

That sounds a little more akin to hitching that you were then honest enough to pay for.Is hitch hiking illegal also? Is it common? Of course I am aware of the potential risks to either party, never better exemplified than in the scene from "theres something about Mary" with the crazy hitchhiker here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIYYZPnacWo

[you weren't carrying a large body bag by any chance though hey John?]

I never saw the 黑车 's in Taiwan. Are they common there?

And while I understand the use of the 黑 in this illegal sense, how would you distinguish these illegal ones then from a legal black taxi that you wanted to describe by colour?

I wonder what A's next line would likely have been in reality if C hadn't come along and interceded? Matt might understand if I proposed a Chinese equivalent of "Don't you worry about that".hehe

changye,

Bowlingual..what a classic.Without it reminds me of this cartoon:

Bill,

I always associate cacti with Mexico, but I didn't know they ate it [the closest I come is associtating it as a source of water if stuck in the desert...I'm sure an unlikely event hehe].Of course tequila is made from agave plants which aren't related to cacti though it's a common misconception. How common is this and what does it taste like? hen hao chi?

dunderklumpen ,

Have you tried going on the "ME" page, then clicking on the 4th tab along "posts" and then checking that it wasn't on the right side of the screen under "Manage Posts"? If you haven't tried it then it might be worth a shot.Good luck mate :)

Wow.I just made my way through this whole discussion and agree with Henning that it is highly educational [thanks guys] and at the same time agree with Cassielin that it was nice that it ended in harmony.Hands across the water.
