loose style/tipsy poem...透彻
Pete,
Just rambling really...well you did suggest a swig or two of my fav potable before the poem, and I've listened to the poem a few times now... [nah, just making false excuses really,I'm 清醒 ]

February 10, 2009 at 6:12 AMDo you mean Sherlock Holmes instead of Charlotte Home? I thought trying to read Chinese was like trying to crack a code that we all have it easy as we have online dictionaries etc for to help decipher, but yours seemed like a harder code to crack.I love a challenge ,and love Sherlock Holmes, but I find that now you're writing in English,I'm not really any wiser.Pray tell.I'd love to know what you mean [unless it's a private convo as it sometimes strikes me it may be,in which case I'll butt out ].
Of course ,Watson [on the right]:

being an 医生 is a very worthy topic for a lesson on health checks, not to mention Holmes detective [侦探] skills also required by good physicians.
Hey,CPod,how about a murder mystery series of lessons at Intermediate level ?

February 10, 2009 at 5:44 AM第二 bite at the cherry [and the crowd goes boo.。。呜呜]:
2 for 月 if you don't count it as a radical when it is the whole character
第三 。。。does this 情 contain the 月 radical down the bottom right. It is different but similar ? I have not counted the ones with similar slightly transformed elements like this [of which there are at least 3 ].I'll be very interested in the answer for what it can tell me about the radicals.
第四。。。万的月
ok,I disqualify myself...three [actually 四。。but whos counting] strikes and I'm out
..and I didn't count the one's in the title which would add an extra one to each total...which could have made me original guess 7 and 5,or my amended guess would have been 3 and 5.Gee so many stabs at it and probably still off the mark, but hey if it was easy it wouldn't be fun.I'll learn from this one..

February 10, 2009 at 5:04 AMNice little dance at the end Ken and Jenny [or sorry,it was Jenny 先 ]。
I'm wondering if my feeling for the difference between 先 and 第一 is correct.xian seems to mean prior, first in the sence of before as in this lesson, whereas di yi seems more ordinal as in first in the race vs 2nd ,etc,or first lesson,2nd lesson etc? Is this correct,or are they interchangeable,or is there a better distinction to be made?

It was great to have David's reading of the poem. Not only because well read, but also because it's nice to hear the poems in male voice too,and particularly one like this about a guy drinking alone.
Love the poem.Very ..er...poetic.I think the format of these lessons is excellent too.Intro [with a bit of a ganbei at the start],listen to the poem ,dissection, summary and overall interpretation, plus links to other sources. Also a little challenge.Let's see.I'd say 6 月 and 4 酉.Great job Pete.Definitely worth listening to a few times.

February 9, 2009 at 10:27 PM...aah;speaking of plagiarism,I'd better come clean. The above videos I posted are not my original work.Sorry folks. They're actually originally the work of one Matt Groening.I'm sorry I can't tell you who then put in the Mandarin voice overs, but that wasn't me either.I hope I shall not be bani-shed.D'oh.

February 9, 2009 at 11:32 AMOk,well Cantonese, but close and on the final day of Chinese New Year celebrations, somewhat appropriate:
But this one's in Mandarin:

February 10, 2009 at 12:47 PMhow appropriate that 先 is first tone.
Now,if we don't already have enough etiquette battles over who should go first ,I once heard Ken say that remember 听 is first tone because you listen first. But hey,so is 说。So the question is,do you 听先还是说先?
