"If possible I try to avoid accommodation and restaurants it recommends, because some I encountered suffered from Lonely Planet-exposure"
...I'd love to hear you expand on this mate. :)

hehe, yeah.I could learn a lot from Chauncy. If it's true that empty vessels make the most sound then perhaps I should learn to curb my habit of being loquacious and explicit, and just drop by for the occasional brief obscure comment. But hey,I'm here to learn,so I don't mind being Chauncy's antithesis.

Very nice post;I enjoyed that;thanks.I think you have a poet in you mate.Liked the Gary Snyder quote too.
Thanks for the posting the proverb Pete.Nice one.I'm impressed with mdbg.Despite the proverb you mentioned being 12 characters long,it recognised the proverb, and then you can click on the scissors tool and break it down as shown here.
bodawei,
Great tale mate.I love hearing Poddies personal anecdotes.
Without wanting to sound disrespectful to these wonderful poets/poems,the brevity of them, the less is more principle,is what is leading them to be so open to interpretation and reflection, and does remind me a little of my mate Chance Gardiner. But they are lovely thoughtful pieces.Looking forward to more.
Hopefully it's a good sign I was studying this lesson at dawn;life has only just begun.
Thanks again Pete for the historical references/explanations which make these poems so much more accessible.

No worries mate.I'm sorry about the link. You're right;it doesn't work.I usually check links etc after posting but must have forgotten.I'll try linking again here, but in case it doesn't work,it was the Ellie lesson "What's your [animal] sign",lesson 1051 ,released December 12 ,2008.
ps Just double checked and link seems to be working now.

Re:"hóuzi is another one of those things. The character means monkey, but you never hear it without the 子."
...have a listen to this lesson mate.
I might be wrong here but my observation is a lot of 2 character words like hóuzi drop the less essential character when incorporated into other words,or where,in the case of the lesson I've linked to,the context makes it obvious.

As a newbie,I certainly bear no hard feelings and in fact thank you for giving some insight into cultural sensitivities.I've certainly learnt something from it.I'm impressed with you coming back to apologise, which speaks well of you.Well said mate.We can't deny history ,but we must learn from it and move on and extend love to all on this small planet.People here on this site generally have much affection for the Chinese, otherwise they would not be bothering to learn such a challenging language,so assuming the best in each other can be a good idea.Cheers :)

...not as disturbing as the story behind it.Nice to see another newbie venturing up into the advanced desert. :) Wish I'd switched to this avatar for the dog meat lesson;see how the carnivores would handle that.
惊心动魄。。extremely disturbing...like the lads dream in the dialogue

April 26, 2009 at 2:00 AMI suggest the menu stealer tracks down that favourite Xi'an dish of Light's and incorporates it in a future episode for us.Sounds interesting, and it was great to get a follow up post trip interview.
A quick look at Xi'an specialty dishes didn't reveal any obvious candidates, but did come up with this interesting one:
"Qishan mountain smell of urine son: Started in Zhou dynasty according to legend, it was a folk and traditional wheaten food good merchantable brand. Use the pork while making ' smell of urine Add the bean curd, Huang Hua, the Auricular, the bottom dishes of the kelp and delicious flavor, float dish, cook soup water surface"
...I wonder what that's all about?
