hehe, thanks changye.I've been meaning to PM you about it and thank you personally..when it's up and running again.I got a collins one.Seems pretty good.Didn't have much to choose from but I'm happy.Actually, working out how to use the radical index to look up characters and then words took only a few secs..very straightforward and easy to use. It's cool to know I can now do that,so thanks for your 建议。 :)

miantiao,

Thanks mate.I have asked and searched for this before without luck,so for something that seems so straightforward to me [and I'm amazed it's hard to come across] I'm starting to feel like I'm asking for the moon. The thing is,what I'm looking for I have seen done really well before but only for a few characters as an example, never as a more complete resource. It has to be out there...somewhere,somehow.

tvan,

different dictionaries do not always use the same radical set.

..yeah,I just noticed that on the weekend.I haven't fully checked it out yet but my paper dictionary had at least one or two of the radicals numbered differently to the radicals in mdbg.Prior to this I presumed they were all going to be numbered the same.

I also would love to get my hands on a book or other resource that goes into detail on how the radicals were originally formed [I s'pose going back to oracle bones] to represent the ideas they were representing [and perhaps showing how the radicals then morphed over the years to their current form] and then the thought process behind forming the characters [sure mdbg has character decomposition[sometimes] which helps but it doesn't discuss the idea behind how they were formed in the first place].If anyone knows of such a resource I would be eternally grateful.

I agree with changye. That's what I took it to mean.I didn't think he was making any reference to his time before Guangzhou at all.

aha,so you're the go to person now Catherine.Welcome and good luck in your new role.

I see the upcoming project differs from John's recent post which was more specifically looking at improving the Community section.Sounds interesting.

Happy Thanksgiving to all our North American friends.

go_manly,

Interesting question.mdbg doesn't have 对边 as a word and yet why is it that when I type duib it is the first option that comes up? I've seen this happen before with other characters that don't combine to make a word.I presume the answer is that it's not a word but that it's a very common collocation.A google search yielded something like 13 million hits for 对边 [not surprising because they're both common characters] but this reduced down to 345,000 when put in inverted commas.I hope you get an answer to this good question from someone authoritative, but in the interim, looking at some of the answers there may help determine how it's commonly being used may yield some insight.

wadecloudfly,

is that because it's similar to cao4?

..well anyway, that could come in handy for when your taxi driver has added to your laundry bill and you reflexly let slip out this 靠 is an expletive under your breath...shenme? ..and you clarify it with a more audible direction of 靠边停车
