January 5, 2010 at 2:21 AMFrom the expansion:
这孩子是个偏才
is translated as:
This kid is a genius in some things and completely lacking in others.
...what I'm wondering is the "completely lacking in others part".Of course there are folk who are 这样..exceptionally talented in one area and quite deficient in others. There are also folk that are genius in one are and just average in many other aspects[and of course everyone has some area they are no good in..usually through lack of attention to that area..eg..you can't expect to be an average golfer if you've never picked up a club].So I'm wondering does this 偏财 not only imply genius or talent in one area ,but also clearly give the additional meaning that they are below par[or completely lacking] in others?

January 4, 2010 at 9:35 AMah yes, that was a very telling comment that I noted with much interest. There have been repeated calls for a Praxis CantonesePod but others have suggested the language is in decline.

In fact we studiously avoided any 'baby talk' and always spoke to our children as if we were talking to another adult. We believed that this showed children proper 'respect'.
Completely agree mate. This was our approach as well, hehe. But you still hear it.Curious what you mean by:
living in China I have come to learn that the roots of this philosophy we espoused lie in individualism.
..as I would find your insights on this matter very interesting from a cultural viewpoint.

hehe, yeah I was reminded of "the Jimmy" instead but as this was a very young kid I thought it was ok.Some kids will do this when they are first learning to talk[in fact you will even hear some parents talk to their kids in a way that encourages this third person approach].At least it's not the Royal We:"Ultraman?..huh..We are not amused"...wouldn't sound too 乖 【well behaved],now would it? I was wondering whether it is more common amongst Chinese kids though.

January 4, 2010 at 2:17 AMWhat a beautiful lesson pic[and the green shirt and background match his nickname, hehe].Thanks for listening CPod and delivering more lessons with kids. Also cool to back up shushu from the lesson the other day.Such a true to life amusing dialogue. You've gotta love the honesty of kids. Here's a pic of Ultraman:

Sure, thanks mate. The 三字经 does go on to elaborate along those lines [but it surely is a summary in itself..though over 5 webpages...and seems to be written mainly for teaching young children [and not going into the more in depth stuff for higher thinkers like yourself] so I think on first glance seems to be doing a making a pretty good fist of it] however while I am not knowledgeable when it comes to Confucian ideology I think those first 4 lines do point to a fundamental difference which is very interesting.Anyhow,I see what you mean so thanks for sharing your thoughts.I'll check out your video link..thanks for that.Actually, there was a recent Advanced lesson on visiting Confucius home town. While it was really just about a tour group there and only touched on a couple of his sayings, there was a request on the boards there for there to be more lessons exploring such traditional culture and I hope that comes through.Could lead to some very interesting discussions that would be great to get your input on. :)

I really don't know but it sounded ok to me [except that it was obviously slowed right down for the benefit of newbies and thus not so natural sounding].I'm wondering what you thought may be wrong,so we can hone in on that.
