January 30, 2010 at 2:26 AMIf I were to say:
还钱给朋友
。。I presume the person doing the 给ing here is my friend and not me.That is to say that I think it's saying:
to pay back money that had been given to me by my friend
..rather than saying something along the lines of
to pay back money I owe to give to my friend..which would possibly be a little redundant.
Is this the right way to look at it?
Also, these examples of paying back a credit card, etc seem to be referring to part payments. What about fully paying off a credit card;怎么说?
No biggie ,but I just thought I'd point out that the audio level of the dialogue tab is much quieter than the podcast.Hehe, first our eyes, now our ears.Maybe next weeks Intermediate lesson should be on a trip to the audiologist...could make for a funny dialogue too. :)

January 28, 2010 at 11:28 PMpauley,
thanks for elaborating mate.Actually if it wasn't for jckeith's above post I would have missed your reply altogether.I keep coming across these hidden replies. So I'd just like to say that I basically never ignore a post and if I've not replied I probably just haven't seen it [and feel free to point out anything anyone thinks I should have replied to].I wonder if having a toggle to chronological is still an option.I'm still finding it hard to locate replies and to follow threads in general and trying to do so seems a lot more time consuming.Anyhow,in response I say I see what you mean.I'm no expert on Indian culture but I must say what jckeith has explained was always my understanding also of what was the custom at least historically. You would think that handing someone money is different to using chopsticks yourself but then again in a restaurant maybe someone still has to clear it away so the situation remains the same.
"sucking the juice out of the bao and then eating them with my chopstick in one motion"
..I'm not sure I've seen this but I'll have to keep my eye out for it.I wonder if there's a youtube or other video of it.Sounds like an impressive skill anyway so good on ya mate. :)

January 28, 2010 at 12:32 PMhehe, sorry John but I can't imagine you being very good at being 隐姓埋名 incognito ,but by all means go for it,and further when you do get inspirations from poddies and do thus deliver lessons that enlighten us on such important things as how to say "Back off or I will castrate you myself!" in Chinese please be sure to dedicate the lesson to the relevant poddie. :)

January 28, 2010 at 2:22 AMhehe, what classic timing with all the talk of font sizes.I love it. :)
I wonder if the future will deliver us glasses with built in hanzi readers like pop up translators. The really amazing ones will see the original object and see it as a hanzi, but it could lead to sensory overload.

January 27, 2010 at 11:47 AMpauley,
"and i coldnt imagine living in china eating with your left hand"
...really? Is that because you feel they'd laugh if you used your left hand or do you feel it is another etiquette thing,or some other reason? I'd also be interested to know whether other left handed people eat using chopsticks in their left hand. It's a good reminder to me 'cos I'm very comfortable using chopsticks and I should learn to give it a crack at learning to do it left handed. You never know when it may come in handy [pardon the pun].

January 23, 2010 at 3:58 AMWhat if you're say Taurus and born in the year of the Ox..does that have any special significance?
Have the young Chinese combined the Eastern and western zodiacs in any way..or put a Chinese angle on the western? The maternity wards could be in for a hammering if this were the case.

“如果你不还钱,你是小狗”
。。要不你是很高兴是小狗【如果长夜】?
。。换句话说,有什么不好是一个小狗?
btw,how do you distinguish between a small dog [maybe an adult of a small breed] and a puppy [could be a very young Great Dane and not particularly small ]
哇,我听了Lili 说:“我迷上淘宝了“
。。很清楚。恭喜Lili;加油!!
