June 7, 2010 at 5:15 AMhehe, well as much as I just love bodaweis comment:
we may have the grounds for a new US-Australia alliance - solidarity on the question of football terminology
I'd have to say that it seems "football" seems to have originated in Medieval Europe, and particularly England [not US sorry mate]. It was only when Webb Ellis broke the rules and ran with the ball in 1823 thus starting another code that terms and clear rules had to be made to distinguish between the codes. Thus the football association was formed in the mid 1800's and that code was called Association Football. Just as Rugby can be shortened to Rugger, Association Football can be shortned to Soccer [by taking the "soc" from the middle of Association]. American football stemmed from these games.

June 7, 2010 at 1:52 AMand I still think that it is a bit of a marketing joke
...yeah,well I grew up calling it soccer so it will always be soccer in my mind and in discussion with other Aussies for sake of clarity.I remember when I first heard it being referred to as football thinking how different it seemed to me from what I'd call football [rugby union or rugby league].I asked some poms what they'd call my brand of football and they said rugby.I have to admit though I can't really argue with their logic.Soccer/football way predates Rugby,it involves striking the ball with your foot [where as rugby also incorporates passing the ball with your hands with a ball that is shaped for just that purpose] and Rugby originated in Rugby from that game of football when William Webb Ellis..yada yada.

June 6, 2010 at 4:09 AMI must say that while the progress tracking will be beneficial to some [and thus a good thing to have another tool] what I would find much more beneficial is the best feedback possible from placement tests. I'd like it to be able to identify where the holes in knowledge are and direct to lessons that can fill them.
Can't wait for the srs vocab tool...any update on when it's coming?
Also looking forward to the grammar guide. I guess there was nothing incorrect with the old guide,it's just that this new one will have added features, right?

June 5, 2010 at 2:52 PMinteresting. Know of any online resource where one can have a listen?
Though totally different, these "noises" remind me that there are other "noises" used in other languages, namely the clicks of Khoisan ..used by bushmen in Southern Africa.

June 7, 2010 at 7:30 AMsuxiaoya,
Can you tell us this much? Was it filmed and run by the same crowd that run the usual "The Amazing Race"? Hang on...just found the answer to my own question...looks like it's hosted not by Phil Keoghan but by one Alan Wu and it looks like it is part of the same franchise. In that case:
I am already cringeing at the thought of being on tv
..if it makes you feel any better I've noticed [like other reality tv] that in the US version at least, they tend to edit it so you are seen at your most entertaining [=most stressed=fighting with your partner or some faux pas [easier to do in a foreign culture I guess] ]. On that note I'd also like to extend a big welcome back. Really great to see you. Please keep us posted ,esp a reminder when it hits the internet. Gee, it'd be even better if it came on telly here. I hope you won. Glad at least to hear that you had a lot of fun. Jiayou :)
