hey thanks heaps mate ...咋 certainly looks exactly right. Funny thing is I was able to type the character by entering "za" but my rollover translates it as zha [shout suddenly] or ze. But that just demonstrates how rollovers come up short sometimes.The other funny thing is I was thinking of zenme which of course has the meaning "how" ...not because it looks like zenme but because of the structure which reminded me of 不管你怎么说。。so I wondered at the time if it was a zenme equivalent.

..the left hand side of 昨 doesn't look right. If it had been this then I guess he's saying:

no matter what you said yesterday I'm not going out [leaving].

I was going to say that this 秦始皇 sounds more like a title than his real name which may well be something like Barry,with Qin referring to the Qin dynasty...开始的始...beginning/first..皇帝的皇...emperor.Just found out that his name was in fact one 嬴政 [so I wasn't far off].

I loved the 什么。。啦 pattern in this lesson and the explanation,and it's application allowing some stalling.

I have a stab in the dark hypothesis.长安..eternal peace,changed to 西安 ...western peace when there was some war in the east and thus no longer eternal peace,but still some western peace. Any takers? No..I didn't think so. Well if the reason is unknown, let's have some more theories.
