July 18, 2010 at 5:13 AM我明白。Still, it sounds like the root of the problem needs addressing and this is the cause of their reaction.

July 18, 2010 at 5:05 AMI grew up calling the upper green hollow part of the plant "shallots" and often this was used raw. Later it became common to cook using the less developed bulb and we called this spring onion or green onion [the former more common I think]. Interestingly I guess the "green" refers to the upper hollow part of the plant , but I can't help but also think of how "green" can mean young or immature which would also be apt.

July 18, 2010 at 4:49 AMusing google map...awesome tip kimiik...i'll have to adopt that trick. I guess it'll work well in a situation like this. But are there any good ways to determine regional differences for everyday words that won't turn up on a map?

July 18, 2010 at 4:38 AMWell if an Australian Aborigine asked me where I was from I would probably initially assume he/she meant which part of Australia. If it turned out that I was being asked which country I was from I would be very surprised [in reality I think this is very unlikely to occur] but would merely reply that I was born here. If the enquiry then followed on to ask where my ancestors were from I'd happily reply. I can't imagine being offended by it though. I guess I see the point, but if the enquiry came out of genuine interest and the right tone of voice I find it hard not to conclude that some people are just a little too sensitive/insecure. I guess the history that andrew refers to may be a good reason for this, but once again I would think take people as they come and if folk have a friendly tone of voice then why such a hostile response?

July 18, 2010 at 2:26 AMHey Vera, nice to hear your voice again and what you've been up to.
Brownies somehow often make me think of Girl Guides going a door knockin'....or maybe that's just in the old movies.
Looking forward to some very interesting lessons this week which should have some lively discussions.

July 17, 2010 at 6:38 AMInteresting and makes sense. I seem to recall a similar thing [people getting dressed up and it being a special outing] as a kid with Pizza Hut at least [not with McD or KFC] when it was all pretty new.

July 18, 2010 at 11:40 AMbut Jenny's neatly emphasises the singularity
...我同意。。。。嗯,对。。更好
。。。I think that perhaps it is a combination of an optical illusion and the power of suggestion with the characters.
