G'day Nik,

I don't think there is any correct answer to this question. I think it's a matter of opinion, but mostly comes down to where you're at...that is, why you are learning Mandarin and what you want to get out of it. Personally I think it's a good idea to learn both at the same time. If time is very limited, sure just learn the spoken langauge. But if you are going through the CPod lessons, I don't think it would take much extra time to at least look at the characters, even if you don't have time to master them straight up. Pretty soon you'll notice the same characters appearing in other lessons and they'll start to stick. Before you know it you'll be able to join in conversations writing in Hanzi [chinese characters]. I think it helps. But many just learn the spoken language and that's fine for them. Welcome to CPod mate. Cheers :)

wow, the transition from xiao to lao seems pretty sudden, with no intervening stage, hey. Is this a stronger trigger for a midlife crisis in the Chinese? [ or given their cultural historical respect for the elderly is this transition to lao seen as a positive thing still?] btw  Do Chinese commonly have midlife crises? If so, what form do they typically take?

wa, xiao zhou was asked 6 times and he still wouldn't come. Must have been some shi [matter] that took up his whole weekend. Maybe he thought it would be his undoing, his zhou mo [zhou mo was no more] so to speak
