"opposite of this game"

..yeah, me too. I remember just jumping on a random bus in Taiwan for the experience and seeing where it took me. Funny thing was when I jumped off and caught a cab I got the same guy I'd had a few days earlier. This was in the centre of Taipei in a part I hadn't been before. You should have seen how excited he got and how funny he thought it was. Warmed the heart...a very nice experience.

"Sadly no, unless the taxi drivers have learnt English"

..ok, well of course normally I'd be giving it a shot in Chinese and as this is an Ellie lesson, I've been sticking to English. But this is a rare case where I actually prefer the English to the Chinese for something that is Chinese. 故宫 【old palace] just doesn´t do it for me like ¨forbidden city¨. I wonder how many taxi drivers would recognise 紫禁城 【purple forbidden city]? ...and as that is the old name ..is it politically incorrect also?

Good advice..thanks mate. Sounds like a London cabbie could teach them a thing or two then.

..sometimes its the length and the specificity that causes a low yield rather than anything being inherently wrong though. If you shorten it to:

”我离那个地方远“

it bumps it up to 8620 results without changing anything in the grammar pattern.

Oh, now I hear where you're coming from. Thanks for clarifying. Yeah, if you wanna go somewhere specific, be specific. Though I guess you could still just jump in and say "take me to the forbidden city", right? I'd love to do that. It sounds a little dangerous, a little clandestine, like you'd just stepped in to a spy novel, and could pretend you're say Jason Bourne. Sometimes it is fun to just be taken to a region and go exploring. Ever heard of that game some play where they put a blindfold on and through a dart at a map of the world and then head there without doing any research? Now that'd be fun if you had the resources.

"Although you wouldn't tell the taxi driver any of this"

...sorry pretzell, bit slow on the uptake here. Why wouldn't you tell the taxi driver? [are you worried he/she would then want to drive you all over the shop and rack up a big fare? or would he/she beg to differ and again want to drive you all over the shop showing you other places?..or get offended? ]

I agree. I love these different formats. And yeah, the language seems to be formal/ different.

Hey pretzell, did we take nishiliu into account when we were contemplating our climb up the language mountain?
