btw I'm surmising that 时 which my rollover has as meaning "hour" may have originally referred to one of these Chinese double hours, thus explaining why the word for hour is 小时...small hour..only 1 hour

ok, been doing a spot of reading and it seems this whole Chinese system for reckoning time stems from observing Jupiters orbit which was rounded from 11.86 years to 12 years and thus the celestial circle following jupiters orbit was broken into 12 sections or "earthly branches"..this is what lead to the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac, and amongst other things has led to these double hours you've referred to jimijames. So these earthly branches can either refer to the corresponding 2 hour period, or when referring to the exact time, it's referring to the centre of that 2 hour period. I just have to work out how the organs came into it now.

sure. I was just curious how they originally came up with this 2 hours per organ thing and was making a postulation that I thought was likely wrong. Do you know where/how that concept arose?

Great tip mate;thanks. I hadn't considered that, but I guess it's time to start adopting that habit on occasion. Ok, so Nciku has a Chinese-Chinese dictionary as well as an English-Chinese dictionary,hey? Do you think that one's the best online one or do you recommend another? I like the example given.

..it still seems to give a fair bit of English which seems strange. And the entry for 诧异 doesn't look the same as the one you got, so I don't feel I'm on the right track here.

...excellent question. I was going to ask the same thing [or something along those lines] from something that arose in the podcast discussion, but I was going to go back and listen more carefully first when I got a chance to see whether Jenny had answered it or not. ps. thanks also for 各花入各眼 which I take to be the Chinese equivalent of beauty is in the eye of the beholder. [Is that right?] Though in this case it seems more referring to the oft observed phenomenon that people will usually interpret studies from their own point of view...to support their own views, which is very true. It has also been shown that you can usually design studies to give results to "prove" your own views, thus the need to have a good understanding of study design and interpretation and the potential for biases [eg such as observer bias...which is perhaps what your Chinese [?saying...?suyu] comes closer to in meaning, duibudui?].

thanks for this jimijames. Yikes though! Is it really going to be 75 minutes on youku? I find here in Australia that even 4 minute song clips take more than 15 minutes to load. I have seen Bruce Lee docos previously. I might see if I can find the same one on youtube ...it would be worth another look at some stage.
