Sorry about the slow reply, but in case you haven't worked it out by now, to access the flashcards do the following:

At the top of your page click on "Tools" [just to the right of Community].

Once you've clicked on that, under "Tools" you should see a number of tabs. It should already be on the right tab, but if not, click on the first tab on the left "Vocabulary"

Under Vocabulary Manager click on "FlashCards"..voila.

As you are new it's possible you may have little or any flashcards at this stage. To start getting flashcards, when you are working on a lesson, under the "Vocabulary" tab, underneath the new vocab there is a button to click "save selected vocabulary" [each new word should by default already have a tick next to it ,but you can unselect some if you want]

What a coincidence. Just yesterday I met someone who's folks escaped Russia to Shanghai and this person was saying Hongkou [explained to me as an area just outside Shanghai..something like that] but at the time I thought it might have been Hangzhou that was meant till listening now. I love what you learn on this site.

oh, I should have listened on. I stopped when I got to 5m21s, but I've just listened on and heard Catherine say "申 or 沪". I had wondered if David was switching to English "or" in there and obviously he was.

No, I don't just mean the traditional form. I may have the wrong take on this, but from what I read this 扈 referred to an old bamboo tool used when catching fish in the area. 4th tone hu. I gather that's where 滬 also 4th tone hu came to be the name of the original village [probably a separate character was used to denote it was specifically referring to the old village itself and not from the bamboo tool that gave rise to the name. I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

At 5m 19s David mentions the original name of Shanghai. Did anyone catch it? I think it's “申【？something】沪...so I'm particularly unsure of the middle character [unless he's saying the English "or" which would make sense]. Anyway, interestingly this old name for Shanghai 沪 seems to have come from 扈 which was a bamboo [?basket] used for catching fish back in the days when Shanghai was a fishing village.
