January 24, 2011 at 3:07 AMhehe, good point, but I think he could be forgiven for having his eponymous syndrome. How many from that far west got that immersed in the culture?..and how aware of them would he have been?

January 23, 2011 at 11:10 PM...I guess you are saying though that in the case of chinese 少数民族 the genetic differences are either non existent or negligible and that these groups are culturally or politically based and not genetically. Yes, interesting question and I suspect you're right...the cultural differences are likely much more obvious and more clearly defined.

January 23, 2011 at 10:58 PM"if that makes sense"
....yeah, I'm glad xiaophil asked because I wasn't certain either, but it's 很清楚 now. Once again you're living up to your name mate, giving us food for thought.
"not supported by population genetics"
...well I think your "well-defined" is likely key here. I think the other factors involved are how long a group of people have evolved with relatively little contact [read breeding] with outside groups, how broad or narrow the groups are, and at what point in history such analysis is done [with a pressure towards homogeneity with time...thus you might expect that historically there may have been more definition barring other factors]
