thanks mate, yes, makes sense. You know I have never looked into this getting unlocked business. When I have signed up for contracts I have usually just asked them about taking the phone overseas [ in the event that I get to go on a trip though nothing is planned..thus not looked into it in detail] and they seemed to be intimating that you could just call a number and get it unlocked. They didn't mention a fee [perhaps conveniently, hehe..dunno]. They made it sound so easy and automatic I wondered why it was locked in the first place. I have used global roaming in the past [1996] ..as RJ has mentioned it's more expensive, but as a short term tourist I was never anticipating making many calls. I'd be interested in hearing more about global roaming vs getting a china sim card

"contracts often give you the phone for 'free' "

...exactly, when you said above:

"BTW - long live pre-pay."

..I was going to mention the upfront cost of an iphone for example and that you can get them "free" on a contract. If your usage justifies that level of contract then it seems more economical.

"no commercial content"

except that the warm fuzzy feeling you're left with just makes you eager to continue forking out for the same company I guess.

that question was specifically addressed in the final bit of the podcast.

Oh, hang on, looks like I'm about 10 days early for that comment, hehe [j/k] Actually good question mate. I'd like to know the answer to that too.

yeah, I deliberately chose one that in a certain light would show a hint of bluish tinge.
