December 9, 2013 at 7:21 PM" It looks like the idiosyncratic usage of the particular translator"
....I've definitely heard it, usually by sports commentators I think. Would have thought it was common enough, and that it was not necessarily specific to any country but if pressed for a country I guess I would have said America [like American Football commentators, or baseball , something like "it's all tied up at the bottom of the ninth"]

December 9, 2013 at 7:15 PM" I think we (some of us anyway) might say 'mini-me'"
....hang on, I would have seen that as directly a reference to Austin Powers, not some traditional widespread usage, but I'd be interested to know if you struck it before that movie.
"we do use junior to refer to the son (eg. Jamie is Packer junior) "
..oh yeah, good point, we will use it in distinguishing between father and son but the key difference is the Junior or Senior title is never part of their name.

I have heard what you're describing, but that too I think of as an Americanism that isn't common here in my experience and I guess the regular naming of one's son with the same name as Junior was closer to the forefront of my mind.

December 9, 2013 at 12:09 AMCalled to mind a river to me, and pictured being swept swiftly to the top of Iguazu falls, grasping for a life raft to back paddle as fast as possible.
But hang on, that man of faith in the Mission climbed up the Iguazu falls, so even if one goes over, can always climb back up again. ;)

December 9, 2013 at 12:01 AMReminds me of our tall poppy syndrome here. I'm starting to feel like we are not only geographically close to Asia.
