haha, it's uncanny how often our reactions are the same....in this case not just thinking the same about that RJ special ..but I also had the image conjured up of RJ sitting in a teepee smoking a peace pipe...seemed very fitting.

"my GP has advised me to go and chop firewood. Every day."

..hey, you could be a lumberjack mate. "I'm a lumberjack and I'm ok...."

Ana,

I really don't think there is one correct answer to this because at the end of the day it comes down to the individual. What are your motivations? Why are you studying it? What do you hope to achieve and when do you hope to achieve this by? For example, if you were learning Chinese because you have a trip to China for a holiday coming up in a month then I don't think there'd be much point learning the characters. Personally, if that was my reason for studying I'd be going through the Newbie archive of lessons and picking out all the lessons that seemed most pertinent to my trip...taxi lessons, ordering meals at restaurants, checking into hotels and the like. If there is no shorter term goal like this then it may well be a good idea to learn the characters at the same time. But I think what is most important is to start engaging with the language in a way that you find enjoyable and then persistence I think is likely the key to long term success. This is one reason I think CPod is so good because the lessons are so entertaining and it makes learning enjoyable.

As for writing itself, I think Skritter is the best there is to help you learn. You can access this by clicking on the practice writing at the bottom of the vocab tabs, or you can get some more functions by subscribing to Skritter itself. It works well with a mouse but even better with a writing tablet. Good luck. :)

This bie wang le is interesting. I think I would have just naturally said that..thrown in the le, but pulling me up to explain why would have drawn an.."ah, dunno". I guess you just absorb some language without always knowing why it is so. Interesting word though because when you forget something, at that point it is referring to something that should have occured prior, something you have already forgotten to do. Anyhow, best to remember as a set phrase as John said.

thanks mate. Looks good, but as this is not an apple product [I think], I wonder if it will invalidate warranty.

hey Bill, this sounds great, but I'm not certain I fully follow the last sentence in Zhongwen...can you enlighten me on this without throwing me in the mud mate?..what's the English and where did you get it from?

I do like this idea of instant enlightenment, though this path to it:

``When you are thinking of neither good nor evil, return to what you were before your father and mother were born.''

..I'm having trouble with as I forgot what I was back then. Maybe our mate thinkbuddha can come and remind me.

chanelle,

you probably already realise this but pleco has handwriting recognition, so you can practice your writing to some extent...it also has flashcards, and it also has stroke order animation for characters
