October 8, 2011 at 1:16 AMI was thinking exactly the same.....I was wondering if the dialogue was trying to imply the CO was making him cough. But as he was about to make a phone call I thought it possible that he was faking a cough[ perhaps heimao doesn't know the stealth of CO] so that perhaps he could disguise some of what he was about to say on the phone [hehe, it would be interesting trying to decipher what is being said in Chinese when it's mixed in with a fake cough and some cryptic clues]....

..but I think it's important as I think there is some potential for confusion here and I'm getting the feeling that I have a different take on the dialogue than even John perhaps. The word I take issue with is the tiny definite article "the". Weishenme ne? Let's elaborate. Hei mao has planted a bomb back at the police station. So obviously there is concern that that will explode at some point. When Li tan zhang states his intent to make a phone call, he does this calmly...at which point heimao questions that he is not worried about "an" [would be my translation...the indefinite article] explosion. So one interpretation could be that Heimao is reacting to Li tanzhang's calmness and that isn't he concerned about "the" pending explosion back at the police station. But I don't think that's what was going on here. Ok, I could have misinterpreted this here, but I thought heimao was expressing surprise that Li tanzhang would risk making a mobile phone call which could potentially spark off an explosion in this increasingly concentrated carbon monoxide atmosphere of the room Litanzhang is in. This is also why I thought Li tanzhang hesitated to proceed with dialing [not as John seemed to be saying that he was taking time to formulate his plan] ..because of the risk of explosion...and this is also why I thought he was cupping his hands around the phone...perhaps to make it less likely the phone would create a spark [otherwise what explanation is there for that action?...so heimao couldn't hear what he was going to say?]
