dannbell,

I don't know that I have this right, but to me it reminds me of like when we say in English things like "who could say" or "who knew"....it's a bit rhetorical with the answer of "nobody"

but more to the Chinese, in this case I think it's a bit like ...no matter who, all didn't speak. Not one person, no matter which one you could name who was there. Not sure if I'm explaining it quite right, but that's the sense i get from it.

"在这里大多数只是初学者"

就是。。特别是在这个“Learning about levels“的系列,而且虽然这个系列的级是”任何“的,实在可能大部分的用户是初学者而中文播客建议在这样的情况下应该用英文。。所以用中文的人比较少 。。。用中文的话,得翻译到英文 [ "here most are newbies" .....exactly, especially in this learning about levels series...also, although the level of this series is "any", in reality probably most users are newbies and ChinesePod suggests in such a situation that you should use English...thus not many users use Chinese here...but if you do use Chinese, you're supposed to translate to English]....mind you this is not clear for a level like "any" as far as I know..it only strictly applies to newbie and ellie levels

"because the dog's panic makes the meat more tender"

Jeepers ! Sounds cruel...you'd get locked up for that here. I find the reasoning very hard to swallow.

This touchy subject sparked 231 comments here:

http://chinesepod.com/lessons/dog-meat-and-animal-rights

and a change of lesson avatar which was much milder than what you describe.

“Is China a wild place? Well... it's all about the subjective point of view, right?"

...yes, subjective point of view exactly. I'd be very interested to see a debate here on that...what makes China "wild"?

Thanks for the link Tal. That may well explain it. I just wasn't sure I'd ever heard anyone refer to China as "the wild east"...I mean maybe I have heard it in passing or jokingly...not sure, but I wasn't aware it was a well known saying....certainly not like "the wild west" is such an entrenched expression....but I don't see why we shouldn't have a Wild East counterpart if we've already got a wild west..then again..if the west is wild...wouldn't yin/yang dictate that the east should be mild, hehe? wild/mild , hehe

很好的问题而留言。

“古怪”。。呵呵对,很好的形容词。我相信可能大部分的中国人有这样的态度

我的印象是中国人对这样的西方事情是一点一点越来越有些熟悉,不过我不太肯定。。。
