July 25, 2012 at 3:33 AMI'd like to hear more about what Chinese folk consider private or embarrassing. Seems to me that it can be a different set. For example, we've all learnt how discussing your salary is something not considered private, whereas it usually is in the west, whereas in this case,the elusive youshi is cracked out. Curious how even if it is private, that there is not even a hint of the type of issue that it is. ..eg health issue without going into the nitty gritty.

...I take it this "you" is not referring to me, but rather Chinese folk who are not going into their private details, right?
...but I guessing you haven't listened to the podcast, right?....because the point John raised in the podcast is you would only be asking someone who was in your tight circle as you put it for such a large sum of money. They still didn't feel obliged to give any other reason than youshi. But my question was more to whether there were some differences as to what was considered private. This lesson seemed to be suggesting that Chinese are more private than westerners and I've heard them suggest in other lessons that Americans are 开放 [ I got that impression myself watching American talk shows when I was growing up...so of course this brings us into the in-utility of using such terms as " the west" which has so many different cultures] and yet we also learn that some things we are private about like our salary, money matters, Chinese seem much more open about. So I was interested in exploring these differences and getting a better idea what they are.
