"she absolutely does not believe ("You are a wonderful human being", or "I love you", for example"

aren't you too young mate to be so cynical? hehe ....or should that be? so young and yet so wise. I guess I'm an old fashioned romantic and will always be, so who can understand the gold digger? [and who would want one?...which is why I'd recommend the opposite approach...cry poor...nah, hang on, I guess that's dishonest too....but what I'm getting at is keep money out of it] Anyhow, I concede you have made a very good case here and I'll acknowledge your orange. But I'm hoping this particular species of hard core orange, the golden orange if you will, is a rare species. I think your average garden variety gold digger probably is not being dishonest at this stage as I think this species probably does believe the words at that point[ or at least what they mean to that person...don't forget folks notions of such things can vary]. I also think that many woman aren't gold diggers as such, but wouldn't want to live in abject poverty either...so may just not find such a proposition very attractive, or practical. I guess there may just be a prerequisite level of security that is desirable.

"I reserve the right to say critical (or words that may be perceived as critical) things about CPod"

...hey Grambers, firstly I didn't think you were being critical of CPod anyway. I thought you were making more of a social commentary about hypocrisy that really does exist out there in dating world, specifically in Shanghai. So I am not defending anyone here....I'm just stating that I was pretty confident it was a deliberate and obvious joke. Furthermore, you do make some very good points, namely:

"writing is in the hands of individuals"

agreed. I'm pretty sure that's usually the case. I get the impression there is collaboration sometimes [perhaps just to check on some points], but I also get the impression that it's usually written by one main person [and I think several members of the staff take on this role...I think it swaps around pretty regularly, but I'm not sure to what degree] Actually I'd be interested to know if they are ever/often co-written....I suspect it may be sometimes.

"almost certain some kind of editorialising, it's not necessarily highly rigorous"

..I'd go along with that impression

...so I guess there could be individual writers for CPod I'm not even aware of, but I'm under the impression that they're usually written by our well known hosts. It may not have been picked up in editorialising, but John would have picked up on it when discussing the lesson during the podcast, or in preparing to discuss the podcast. When I get the chance in the next day or two, I'll have to go back and listen to what he says at that stage, but for now I'm about to hit the sack.

"unwittingly funny, or unwittingly stupid"

yes, folk do that...another good point, but again, others pick up on it at some point, and I don't think that would slip through that easily unnoticed even if there isn't much editorialising.

"Hypocrisy wouldn't exist as a concept if the people who did it were not blind to it, right?"

yes, very good point...but again, I default to others picking up on it.

"I think it follows that it MIGHT be possible that that line was penned unknowingly"

...I think you have made a good case which has moved me from 99.9% certain it was a joke to something like 97.384% certain it was a joke...yes, I'll grant there is possibility there.

I just hope CPod weigh in and confirm so I can collect my beer you promised me above if I was right ;)

"if it's normal (and therefore OK) for females to select male partners on the basis of their wealth, is it not normal (and therefore OK) for males to exaggerate their wealth - even to the point of pretending to be a 富二代?"

...I would say it's not a suprising result for some to respond this way, particularly if the objective was a one night stand for example, but are we not comparing apples and oranges here? On the one side we have a questionable value, and on the other side we have dishonesty, and I don't think the latter is a good basis for/start to a serious relationship. Probably both should walk away, hehe, though I'd say that the females have this one [not that I go for such generalisations], dishonesty being a worse offense.

Does Chinese have an equivalent saying to "two wrongs don't make a right?"

yeah, he might also acquire a taste for lajiaoshui, maybe he'll like it even more than these gals and that will be his objective...free lajiaoshui, hehe..which, btw I presume is the same pepper spray that is usually sprayed in the eye's of offenders...so a different use to the usual, slipping it in the drink here [because the dialogue was all about the sneaky manoeuvre here and not a full frontal mace in your face attack...though that may have cured his beer goggles] ....anyhow, I mean this is just like how tabasco sauce is added to some alcoholic beverages...though I just read that in the American west Prarie Fire was a punishment for losing bar bets.

G'day Grambers,

“I know Shanghai well enough to know that there is at least a decent chance chance this was not a joke.”

。。ok, well I've never been to Shanghai so I'll have to take your word on that. But, I guess it all boils down to whether CPod were making a joke [as CPod staff wrote it and not "Shanghai" if you get my drift], or instead were making an observation....and of course it could be both...but if it is both, it is still a joke. Firstly, I thought this was typical of CPod humour....the twist, the hypocrisy, and obviously so, ..to the extent I'd be willing to wager on it [and also to the extent that I thought that just because it wasn't commented on that it didn't mean it wasn't noticed by one and all....but don't get me wrong...it's not that I don't enjoy reading comments by the likes of yourself and RJ...I love such social and cultural commentary]. But secondly, to suggest it was not a deliberate joke would be to suggest that whoever wrote the dialogue was blind to the hypocrisy of it [ I just can't believe it was accidentally in there...just as a matter of course of typical dialogue]...so even if it is typical of Shanghai, John had a hand in this [at least in the intro and podcast discussion] and he would have picked up on it if he didn't think it was a deliberate joke [actually, now I'm curious, I don't even recall what was discussed in the podcast when they got to that part of the dialogue]. But also, take Jenny for example, Shanghainese but very much a woman of the world, hehe. She studied in Australia and I was listening to one of the old olympic lessons...the one on national flag I think it was, and she said something like that she felt "on the loose" ...I think that's how she put it...but anyhow, her point was that she was part of a worldwide community. Anyhow, my point is that I don't think we have naive folk here at CPod writing these dialogues and not realising the hypocrisy of it. Anyhow, I think such hypocrisy as this is somewhat universal, which makes it all the better fodder for a little humour.

Hey, I'm enjoying your cultural comments. Jiayou :)

Yeah, RJ did above:

我们继续喝啤酒,看帅哥。At this point its the same he has done to them, except for the smile.

...I thought it was mingxian humour

btw, one might be tempted to think that the lajiaoshui kinda put a stamp of finality on the whole affair and make a sequel unlikely, but I say hell to the no to that !! Is Frank a man or a mouse? Heck, he should laugh at this light rebuff...embrace it even...lajiaoshui could be his new manly essence...
