April 27, 2008 at 2:07 AMHi hitokiri6993. Oh pity. "Sons of the Yellow Emperor" has a pretty brilliant section on Filipino Chinese mestizos, interesting background on Jose Rizal, and an analysis of the Chinese role in the Filipino economy which makes good reading. Hope you can at least find this book in a public library! The book has not been updated since it was published in 1994, so it misses the "Asian Crisis", but for background it is unbeatable.

April 27, 2008 at 1:51 AMHello! 我是华侨!My two favourite books on the Chinese diaspora are Lynn Pan's "Sons of the Yellow Emperor" (published in the late 80s, now back in print thanks to Kodansha; and "The Encyclopaedia of the Chinese Overseas" published by the Chinese Heritage Centre in Singapore and edited by... Lynn Pan. Thank you CPOD for this wonderful lesson. And light487 -- your "Mandarination" never ceases to amaze me. I think you definitely have a gift for this particular language.

April 24, 2008 at 5:19 AMHi, I'd just like to thank maxiewawa for that great link to the analysis of Kevin Rudd's Mandarin, which I enjoyed hugely but forgot to thank maxiewawa for! Thanks!

April 23, 2008 at 2:35 AMlight487, I'm love it that you've taken to using a word -- "chickbabe" -- which my friends and I thought we invented! Don't overdo it with anything which sounds like "written exercises"; just have a quick look and see what that book from your beloved chickbabe tries to cover. Anything which interests (or puzzles!) you in particular, just search for the CPOD lesson which covers it. It's not that easy to get an "overview" of Mandarin grammar through CPOD, that may be what you're missing at this stage...

April 23, 2008 at 1:14 AMDear light487, you've used the word "roadblock" more than once today... don't let it worry you, okay? You're doing great. Sometimes we just need a bit of a break (to allow everything we've learned to "digest"). Sometimes we just need to do things a little differently once in a while, to keep things feeling fresh. Here is some auntie advice: Are you using a course, besides CPOD? Even something basic and compact, like "Teach Yourself Mandarin Chinese" or "Colloquial Mandarin"? Now may not be a bad time to buy something like that and just have a go at working your way through the entire thing quickly, briskly and without lingering over anything. At best, it might give you a great overview of Mandarin "grammar" (which CPOD doesn't attempt to give you) and consolidate what you've learned so far by helping to pull all the threads together. And besides, you seem like the kind of "results-oriented" typical male who needs to be able to measure his progress, and completing this kind of traditional "book + CD" course might give you an important sense of satisfaction. All the best!

April 22, 2008 at 10:23 PMCPOD, I think you've been busted by light487, who has been learning Mandarin for... how many months? If I hadn't been following his Mandarin progress via reading his posts, I think I would have trouble believing how far into Chinese characters he is. A real Mandarinomaniac!

April 27, 2008 at 2:54 AMHi changye. This Auntie is suffering from CPOD withdrawal symptoms ever since her Mac stopped working two days ago. Fortunately, I think the hard drive is fine, it's just the contact for the "POWER ON/OFF" button has gone. Fingers crossed... I do so much with my computer, I don't even own a CD player (ouch!) or DVD player, and it's a bit of shock not to listen to my "pottering around the Tiny Flat in the morning"-music.
