Oh no. Sorry, everyone. My two-year-old nephew got into the laptop when I wasn't paying attention. He actually types and knows how to press "submit", I'm not joking. His Nanny has just carried him off and now he is crying and kicking because he wants to post on CPOD. I need to speak to his father. So sorry.

The children must be so afraid, if they are still alive... my whole heart goes out to them and their parents and grandparents and even their aunties and uncles... I hope this is not true.

Nobody deserves this, of course. Sorry. I'm just upset. I can't imagine how the parents must be feeling.

This is terrible. Can anybody confirm the reports coming in of 900 children buried in a school that collapsed? China does not deserve this.

alwingate, 62 is NOTHING. You are great. Simply great. I enjoy all of your posts (your personality?), and I hope you will keep me/us posted as you acquire Chinese characters. Careful -- it can be addictive. Just ask light487...

Hello nguyen, if what you're looking for is a general guide to Chinese pronunciation (发音) and hanyu pinyin -- with MP3s --, you might find http://www.pinyin.org useful. All the best!

Hi skabadelic. Your mention of the fact that many of the Chinese people in Chicago's chinatown seem to be Cantonese goes a long way towards explaining the Chinese characters for the city name. In Cantonese, if I'm not mistaken, the characters are read as: Jick-Gar-Go".

The "other baggage" on the part of newbies is not my problem, nor is it my concern. That is for CPOD to sort out. No?
