Are you in Western Canada, by chance? I recently read an article about how expensive real estate is in places like Vancouver, and I was shocked. I also read that many people have basement suites/apartments and rent them out to help offset the cost of their house.

I think this lesson is incredibly useful and was a great idea.  It makes me a little ashamed, though, because I don't even know what all of these grammatical terms mean in English (and I'm a native speaker)!  This is inspiring me to brush up on my English grammar as well as Chinese!

I'm curious as to what you mean - are you referencing access to media? Or something more subtle?

Personally, I can't imagine every understanding as much about Chinese culture overall as a Chinese person; but perhaps you're referencing something more specific.
