July 11, 2007 at 2:33 AMI used to love Chinesepod because all the lessons and dialogues were so true to what you might encounter in day-to-day life speaking Chinese, but this lesson is absurd. This dialogue is so unrealistic. I mean come on, when have you ever heard of someone moving TO Canada???

In the words of Bruce Lee, "It's like a finger pointing at the moon (SLAPS student in the head). Don't concentrate on the finger or you miss all the heavenly glory." For those of you who are new to the site, Ken's tone mistakes are planned and deliberate. Yes, it's true. I'm sorry Chinesepod for revealing your teaching secrets, but people are being smothered by the veil. It's all a facade- a barometer, deliberately placed there to help you- the good student- track your progress. If you're a Newbie and you can start to tell the difference between when Ken's tones are right and wrong, congratulations, you're an elementary student now. You passed the Test. If you're an elementary student, and it's reeeeaaallly pissing you off that Ken is saying 'xiang' instead of 'shang', then pop the cork on the champagne, it's time for you to start taking Intermediate classes, where Ken is no longer testing you and you can try to discern if John has an accent or not. So Auntie, congratulations on your progress. You passed the teste Soon, you will be a connoisseur of Mandarin, maybe even a newspaper critic for Chinese stage productions!
