Rhetorical questions, right?

As you are in the US and I am not, I believe you regarding the States, so perhaps John should have known, perhaps not.

I don't believe it is the case in Australia. We haven't taken this concept of guilt by choice of words quite as far as you have in the States. This PC thing has gone way too far.

Sorry, whenever I have an opinion contrary to yours, I'll ask permission to butt in.

"It has become derogatory since it's being used more and more by elected officials who are trying to limit their freedom."

I guess that's an American thing; it doesn't happen in Australia. Except perhaps for a certain Bob Katter who no-one takes seriously anyway. So I think your feeling for the word is probably limited to the States.

"There is nothing wrong with showing a little care in your words."

That's assuming you first have a sense of which words others consider to be wrong. I for one would not have guessed that there was anything wrong with that word. Playing your part in 'educating' others about your preferred words is fine. But it can be done without appearing to claim a moral high ground.

I don't believe I've heard homosexual used in a pejorative sense, at least not without adding extra intonation. This is in contrast with the 6 letter f word that does not need intonation to make it sound pejorative - the word itself carries baggage with it. Just the fact that John needs to be told that you find homosexual offensive should suggest that he (and most others) don't consider the word itself to be insulting.

My point is - why feign offence at the choice of language when you KNOW that John was not attacking gays? If you know that no offence was intended, then you are simply CHOOSING to be offended. But there is nothing wrong with correcting, and now that he has been corrected I'm sure John will take care to use the 'correct' word in the future. I just think saying you don't 'appreciate' it is a bit harsh given his obvious lack of intention to offend.

What makes that term inappropriate or offensive? Should I be offended at being called heterosexual instead of straight?

Or, asking it a different way, is there any reason someone should have known that you would have been offended by that term, given that the rest of us (to the best of my knowledge) are not offended by the term heterosexual?

But even if you can't hear a clear 'n', you can still pick up the telltale nasal sound which is absent in words that don't end in 'n'.

I agree. I've never understood why many hippies, who talk about 'getting back to nature', choose to defy nature by defiling their body with tatts.

I agree that the second translation seems a bit odd, even wrong.

But the first one seems OK, although most people would not say it that way. I think that 'randomly' is used merely to reflect the sense of 乱.
