it made it possible to describe the sound of a character phonetically. Before that there were other systems but without any system word of mouth was the only way.
Pinyin was invented long before computers and sms.:-) but it did work out rather well didnt it?

June 23, 2009 at 8:55 AMIn my experience, starting off a conversation with "buddy", often leads to a fight. Such as:
"Hey buddy, how about moving that car." or
"You going to be there all day buddy?"
"Hun" may work if your waitress has a few miles on her, and her name is Flo. :-) Although successful use of "Hun" or "Honey" depends a lot on the skill of the user. Language is so much more than just talking.

I suspect it was rather recent but there is a radio station here that caters to the lowest common denominator, and I have heard that there. Its as if they are too young to really know what the word is supposed to mean. Also Randy Jackson on the American Idol tv show (not my favorite) refers to everyone as a "dude" or "dawg", females included. Sounds terrible to me.
