My original chinese name given me by friends was 白龙杰 (bai long jie). They often called me and still do call me 老白. I stopped using it because it seems too much like a comic book characters name.

Well, Im glad its not up to you. Statements like this imply that those of us who disagree with you are doing it "wrong". We must not be as smart as you. Why should I have to use a dictionary when cpod is supposed to be doing the teaching? Individual characters often do carry meanings into words and those meanings are used again in other words. A literal translation allows one to build those connections. Everything isnt a lexical chunk.
And you completely dismissed the point Howard was making. I am an American and I dont use many of the idioms you come up with, nor do I ever hear anybody else talk that way. I wouldnt want to hear anybody talk that way.
