you are correct that we never say things like thanks thanks but we may say thank you, thank you or careful careful so there is some precident to using this technique for emphasis in english.

Welcome to Chinese Pod. A common way to say "I'm sorry" is 对不起 dui4 bu4 qi3 which also means "excuse me". "I am sorry" is also 我抱歉 wo3 bao4 qian4. I hope that answers your question.

It is true that the customer is always right, until an ethical or legal transgression has occurred that is. The same dept stores that bend over backwards to serve, also post signs that threaten "prosecution to the fullest extent of the law" once said customer would happen to be caught shoplifting for example. I think this is a similar situation in which theft, deceit, and unethical behavior have occurred, and not alledgedly, because the "customer" has admitted it freely. I have had my own intellectual disagreements with Pete, but he is always civil and I notice that he takes the time to answer each and every inquiry, leaving no one out, to the best of his ability. In this regard, I think he does better than most. I was more put off by some of Matt's recent "PMP"ing posts to abrasive newbies at the expense of, or at least ignoring seasoned veterans who had challenged said abrasiveness. Evidently that elusive dollar in the bush is more important than proven loyalty. As for a new policy, I think a couple of well placed PM's asking some folks to "reel it in a little" may have been sufficient. Drivel can be scrolled through and it does help to keep the boards "alive". I fear such new policies may turn a once vibrant posting area into a desert wasteland. I also doubt that questions would be answered more effectively without the added volume. Questions that go unanswered are rarely buried in drivel. This I think is a poor excuse. Off topic tangents occur spontaneously in many cases and to ask people to switch posting locations and hyperlink to it every time they drift off, is unrealistic. If a major idea for a topic is mined from such discussion, then yes, in that case maybe, but this new policy idea was not well thought out. In light of recent developments and considering the many comments that have been made, I would hope this be put on hold for a while. Sufficient rules are already in place to allow staff to put down what any reasonable adult would consider a problem. Cpod is a great place to learn Chinese and the boards are often vibrant, full of life, and stocked with a sense of helpfullness and comraderie. I would like to see it stay that way. Its not only the staff that answer questions and contribute learning materials. The boards are one of the things that sets Cpod apart and to tinker with that is unwise and dangerous in my opinion.

I think "pengyou" may be my first KTV song but it would take a truckload of beer to get me to sing. (you wouldnt want to hear that anyway). There's not enough politeness in all of China to complement my singing. I blame my elementary school music teacher. What a beast.
