May 29, 2012 at 3:45 AMI would like a Qingwen on describing all the possible textures of food. This comes up often at dinner, and then when I return home to try to figure out once and for all what the other person was saying or how to express what I wanted to say, the dictionary is no use! For example, I wanted to describe sea cucumber as very chewy, or perhaps rubbery; the other party suggested the word 坚韧, which the dictionary then translated as "tenacious."
Mushy, soft, smooth, gritty, crunchy, flaky, crumbly, powdery, chewy, rubbery, tough, melts in your mouth, etc....
I have also heard that there are some differences between Chinese and Western perceptions of textures of things in the mouth; it would be nice to have this addressed too.
Finally, is 口感 the texture of something in the mouth, or the experience of something in the mouth, including texture? I haven't been able to figure this out. If 口感 is not purely texture, how does one specifically indicate that one is referring to just the texture of something in the mouth?

May 27, 2012 at 3:49 AMI am in China now. It was 3-month nightmare getting a 6-month visa. Eventually a Canadian friend hooked me up with a home stay in China. The family wrote a 邀请函 saying they wanted me to live with them for 6 months to help their daughter's English.
