As Codexus mentions the 別 bie...了le pattern seems useful. So, can I say: 別吃了。bie chi le. 別听了。bie ting le. 別看了。bie kan le. Are there any verbs that bie should not be used with?

Amber, From the pictures that AzerDocMom took and posted I can tell that your "Bambi Eyes" would work very well in any situation, but I admire your spirit, even if you can't help it, in speaking up for yourself.

Years ago I was stationed in Taiwan. Prices were really cheap then and several of us rented a house. We hired a lady to clean the house and do our laundry. She also cooked dinner for us. In addition, we had to hire a "guard" to watch the house when we were gone otherwise we probably would have been robbed. Is crime a problem at all as far as people breaking into apartments and houses in Shanghai?

I'll echo other poddies comments. It is great to hear AZERDocMom and Josh. Josh's comment about people expecting him to understand Chinese reminds me of several of my friends who were born in America, but have Chinese parents. It is a shame that few of them were taught how to speak Chinese, but perhaps the families felt it was more important for the children's future to master english as Americans. It is only recently that I have learned the term ABC. One of these friends describes himself as "a banana"; Yellow on the outside, but white on the inside. Sometimes when we go to Chinatown for lunch, the waiters will try to speak to him in Chinese. He must give them the palms up "I don't know" gesture, and then they are even more surprised when I'm able to respond (pretty basically) in Chinese.

我怕星期一。 This seems to be a common pain.

Fullhouse, Thanks. Keep coming back to Chinesepod. I'm sure everyone will benefit from your insight from Hubei. It is always interesting to see the world from another persons point of view.

fullhouse, So, if Bento was the person in this lesson's picture, you could tell right away that he was not Chinese! Please tell me more about the different way that Chinese read papers.

你好. Indeed, Ken and Jenny have taken the most basic lesson and made it interesting. I didn't think I would learn much from a lesson titled Ni3hao3, but I did!

Bento, If you buy a Chinese paper, sit on a bench and open the paper in front of your face, there is a good chance passers by will think you are Chinese.

Connie, thank you. I never considered 睡着 shui4 zhao1. I was trying to say 睡觉 shui4 jiao4. Actually being asleep makes more sense, in this case. In english I don't think we always make a difference between going to bed (to sleep) and actually going to sleep, so I might say, "I no sooner go to bed than I have to get up."
