A grammatical Chinese sentence which most resembles the above English question would be: 为什么照片里没有Ken和Jenny？ (Wèishénme zhàopiàn lǐ méiyǒu Ken hé Jenny?) A more common way to ask it might be: 为什么不用Ken和Jenny的照片？ (Wèishénme bù yòng Ken hé Jenny de zhàopiàn?) Why don't you use a picture of Ken and Jenny?

September 20, 2007 at 1:43 AMHi! 没 (méi) is used for negating the past, while 不 (bù) is used for negating the present and future. So we have: 我不去 (wǒ bù qù) I won't go / I'm not going 我没去 (wǒ méi qù) I didn't go The exception is the verb 有 (yǒu), meaning "to have," which is always negated by 没 (méi), and never 不 (bù). Not only does the teacher need lots of experience with accents (foreign and non-), but the teacher also needs experience giving criticism (i.e. not instinctively stifling all observations that might be considered negative). I was most impressed by one of my professors from last semester who is actually in charge of the 普通话测试 (Pǔtōnghuà cèshì - Test of Standard Mandarin [for native Chinese speakers]) for the Shanhgai area. After one class he could pinpoint precisely where my Mandarin pronunciation needs work, and also even had criticisms for Dashan's nearly flawless Mandarin.
