October 25, 2007 at 1:52 AMbryan, My favorite explanation of 嘛 (ma) is the first I ever saw, in a regular Oxford C-E/E-C dictionary, of all places. It went something like this:
A sentence-final particle used to indicate that a statement is considered obvious to the speakerThat's how it's most often used, but it can also be used when persuading someone. So while you could say 来吧 (lái ba), saying 来嘛 (lái ma) is perhaps more insistent, and a bit whiny. We have NOT given up on the Grammar Guide, but we're in the process of a technical upgrade which necessitates putting a hold on the content development. When the upgrade is done, work on the Grammar Guide will resume, and at a faster pace, now that Clay is here. Also, the Grammar Guide will have more functionality than it did before.
