November 12, 2007 at 9:02 AMInteresting that the Simpsons should come up. I've been watching it all weekend with my wife, with Chinese subtitles. Unfortunately the subtitles are pretty bad, so I have to explain a lot. The Simpsons is so chock-full of American culture, though, that often translation just can't do it justice.
Posted on: Do you have a girlfriend?
November 12, 2007 at 1:19 AMWhen I arrived in China as a young single guy, I was shocked at how often girls would ask me this question. Even when I taught English and introduced myself on the first day of class, when I gave them Q&A time, someone would always ask (sometimes a girl, sometimes a guy). No, it's not just me... the kids in Hangzhou seemed intensely interested in the love life of a foreigner.

November 8, 2007 at 5:43 AMI thought it was kind of funny how Dave started talking about the prohibition of eating as a "classic Western motif" but was immediately cut off by Amber and Jenny who wanted to talk about something else. Dave, what did you mean by "要 doesn't mean 'to want,' it means 'to will'"??
