I once participated in a Chinese event where, in order to sound less confrontational, everyone had to use 同时 (tóngshí) instead of 但是. It was very difficult!

Unfortunately, a lot of the information we incude about Shanghai is destined to become outdated eventually. Hopefully it's helpful to a lot of people before that happens!

Less direct would be more deceptive, and thus more morally repugnant...
