Disappearing posts

July 18, 2010 at 02:34 AM posted in General DiscussionI write a reply to a post and before I have a chance to post it - it just disappears from the screen. Lost. A lot of time and energy wasted.
My previous post on this seems to have disappeared. I wonder if one problem is the size of the Group - it is now difficult to see the list of problems. Maybe it is here and I cannot find it.
Regardless, there has been no response from ChinesePod yet - could you look at this problem please guys?

I'm having a really strange problem, which only happens on this website. It only happens intermittently, but it is really annoying when it does.
Every so often while typing a comment, a whole new window opens up which has nothing to do with Chinese Pod. And it only happens when I type the letter 'g'. From that point on, every time I hit 'g', another window keeps opening.
At first it sounds like a keyboard problem, like I might have a sticky <ctrl> or <alt> key. But the problem goes away the moment I refresh the page, and not before. And I don't think refreshing the page will 'unstick' a keyboard.
And of course, the moment I refresh the page, I lose what I have already typed.
And another problem I'm having - half the time I add a new comment, I am sent to a completely blank page. I have to 'go back' and then refresh the page in order to see my comment. The comment is always there, but again this is damn annoying.

My comment was a bit terse - I did know what you meant. I use 'Chinese Tools' to enter the characters, then paste them here. I tried recently to install the Chinese keyboard, but it requires the Windows CD, which I don't have.

sorry...I think I must have expressed that poorly. You write Hanzi at times so you must be able to switch your keyboard input to Chinese at times do this [unless you are copying and pasting or something ].....this is what I was referring to.

Does voice recognition pick up tones? Specifically, will it be able to recognise MY tones.
Anyway, as I said, it can't be my keyboard - refreshing the page clears the problem. And it only ever happens on this site.

You're problem reminds me of my five year old Dell laptop at home - I have given it a good working over and now every time I hit 'x', and 'z' nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. Now 'c' is starting to go. I have tried a workaround - just leaving these letters out of the word (or inserting a *) - but I fear I am going to lose the battle. Like an old beat-up piano in the Last Chance Saloon where three of four ivories are missing. You and I both need to investigate voice input software - arthritis is going to get us before too long anyway.

..sounds like your name has come to haunt you, and the computer is anticipating the old BASIC command "goto" . ...j/k [lame I know but I can't help myself sometimes] . That does sound frustrating. Sometimes I find switching between English and Chinese keyboards that I haven't clicked enough and I'm in Spanish or French or something and thus will get the odd character. I doubt that's the explanation here, but you don't happen to have any other keyboards installed by any chance do you?

bodawei,
mate, I can certainly understand the frustration of that. I probably can't help, but just in case....is it happening before you hit the add comment button? [if it's happening after...perhaps you could do what I do which is to copy it before posting ..just in case] ....are you accidentally hitting some wrong key?....I do this occasionally and usually find ctrl+z brings it back. Sorry if this hasn't helped. If it happens in the middle of typing that's really strange. Good luck :)

Irony .. irony. I have had a bad time with this today - five or six messages lost. Just touching wood as I type this, difficult as I am a speed typist. :) Then TWICE ... TWICE while writing this message it has snuffed out my words. Pooof. It's enough to send me off to a read a textbook.
I have been trying to isolate the key I am touching when stuff disappears (it is always before I hit 'Comment') and I think that it is the space bar. But of course not every time. It seems that this is a problem I do not share with many - could have sworn though that the first time I posted this problem I got some 'me too' comments. Maybe all the 'me too' guys have given up. Not me ..
I can tell you that it does not disappear while I am staring at the screen :) I have to be hitting the keyboard, so I like the wrong key theory,,, It seems I cannot blame ChinesePod for this one. Soooo disappointing, I really am a good whinger.
