I'm trying to explain that "i can read some characters, but i'm not literate"... here's my best attempt

我认字， 我没有识字

Nice try. “认字” and “识字” both mean, "can read". You can say: 我认识一些字，但是没有广泛阅读的能力, wǒ rènshi yīxiē zì，dànshì méiyǒu guǎngfàn yuèdú de nénglì.
