I’ve just found an etymology of “拔河” on the Internet, which has long been on my mind since I learned the Chinese word several years ago. “拔河” is originated in a military training done using boats in the river (), in “楚国”, one of Chinese ancient kingdoms, about 2,400 years ago.

Btw (light digression), I wonder why the famous German city of Bayreuth is called 拜罗伊特 in chinese instead of something like 百合 (or even 百合) which would sound much closer.
