Big Brain - Suggest a Lesson Set!

Italiana asked an interesting question today about what to study after the Intro 6. Lesson Sets are a great solution for this kind of question, but it made me wonder how much awareness there is of the Lesson Sets. For those who don't know, Lesson Sets are groups of lessons we've picked from the archive because together they solve a particular problem.

We haven't published a new one for a while, and it strikes me that the Big Brain could probably design them better than we could...

So, if you want to demonstrate your mastery of the CPod archive, and make a Lesson Set that will benefit all your fellow students, we are taking requests.

The only guidelines are;
- at least 10 lessons
- of the same level
- grouped around a single theme or purpose
- with a short title

Post your suggestions here, and the best will be 'magically' turned into Lesson Sets in the blink of an eye (well, by the end of next week, at least).

Or you could do one on Holidays and/or Traditions. . .

Hey, thats me! I knew what to do next after the intro (the newbie lesson sets) but I wasn't sure which one would be the next best to do (which order). I like the idea of the Health and Wellness. One with Sports & Activites might be nice. I'm not sure how to write it all out though....

I like TaiPan's idea of having lesson sets feeds, so you just download them into a separate podcast folder on your ipod, no messing.

Henning, I was also thinking of an internet / tech set, you could add C0524 / My New MP3 Player. And while mixing that many levels in a set may not be practical, I think Steve should loosen up the same-level constraint one notch and allow 2 consecutive levels (A+B, B+C etc.).

I would like to make the point again to give us the tools to build/share custom sets, including an unrestricted search interface mixing all available attributes

As goulnik stated above the challenge is to contain the sets within one or two levels. Although there are more than 540 lessons total, within each level selection is not always that wide (except Newbie). An Intermediate-only lesson set would eat up 10% of all lessons, a Media set even 30%.

So my suggestions do not work very well in that regard - yet.

"Transportation":

Upper Intermediate - Chinese Commuters

Upper Intermediate - When the Taxi Takes the Long Way

Intermediate - Airport Announcements

Intermediate - Subway Announcements

Intermediate - Stop speeding!

Elementary - Directions with a Map #1

Elementary - Directions with a Map #2

Elementary - The Traffic Jam

Advanced - 汽车消费

Advanced - 物流

Tech:

Elementary - My computer froze!

Elementary - Adding Credit to a Cell Phone

Elementary - Buying a SIM card

Elementary - Office Policy: Internet

Elementary - Surfing Online

Intermediate - Buying a Computer

Advanced - 黑客和电脑病毒

Advanced - 传媒大战

Advanced - 3G通信网

Advanced - 论坛VS博客

I wished I could do "Space", but, well, we have to wait:

Media - 太阳系只剩8大行星

Media - 是飞碟吗?

Hi goulniky,

Thanks for linking to the sets properly (somehow I inserted the wrong link - that'll teach me for posting after midnight). I also don't know why the first link didn't work, but here it is again.

Toss a bone to us news-hounds trying to cultivate a vocabulary that would make listening to radio a bit easier. Yeah, I know I'm a long way from getting my news from 9.90 AM Shang-Hai -- but I cackle with silly glee when I can pick out words and the occasional phrase in their news reports or conversations. I'm talking about geographic names, political entities, popular culture, etc. If Chinese radio is anything like German or Russian radio, they have stock phrases that reappear daily; "so-and-so met with ... ", "X number of people perished", "some bureaucrat declared ... ", and such.

... not even, some of them do mix categories (Newbie and Elementary)

Actually, the lesson sets aren't that hard to find (bottom of each page under Explore, just not easy to Search for). But they confusingly indicate a different level (3 or 4) from the usual categories (Newbie as it turns out).

uh Steve, you probably want to check the 2 links in your posts, don't seem to work for me :-( and I'm also at a loss how to find the said sets.

Anyway, my first reaction would to let each of us make (and thus share) their own sets, in an Amazon kind of way.

One proposal I would have is shopping/Intermediate.

Tags would be a good way to get started, or so I thought. I normally use my own custom-built interface for this, but I'm really surprised to find that tag lists (functions or topics) aren't listed alphabetically, not very convenient in my view. Search results also cannot be sorted by Category (i.e. level).

Tag names can't used without an explicit search term it seems, so I tried "Shop" which unfortunately only returns 5 Intermediate lessons, (6 according to my list which includes tags, namely Going on a Diet, My New MP3 Player, Lovers' Spat, Negotiating Price, Buying a Computer, Finding a Supermarket). Standing in Line could easily be added to that one, ok it's only 7, I'm sure I can add a few more, but why does it have to be 10 anyway?

The point is, I do thing Shop(ping) is a good theme, the content is there, attributes and all, but the tools to grab it are sub-obtimal (or not easy to find)

Steve,

Two things that might help inspire people to use lesson sets:

Make it easier to find. I'm on this site daily and clicked to a few different places looking for a link before I found it buried at the bottom of the page.

Make lesson sets their own feed to subscribe to (that way every time one is added to the set, I'll automatically get it on itunes)
