Your right, it's not very clear at all. I think I can hear a hint of the x sound in there, but might just be my brain trying to fill in the gaps.

The 好像 fits but John definitely says it as a sort of "eryan" - basically just mumbled. I'm sure we do this in English as well which makes transcription tough.
Agree with all your others. Not quite sure where my "wife's car sickness" came from instead of "riding bicycles"! I think it's because John's 行 in 自行车 sounds more like a 晕 and I was just trying to work out characters that matched it and were vaguely to do with driving...

Can't believe that's yet another alternative to "zhe yang" I've unintentionally come up with. Will add it to my "这样", "将", "John"! Your 这也 makes sense, but I just can't pick up what John's saying there, even at half speed.

I'm not sure, Zhen. Just throwing it in as a possiblity. I guess it's either both or none, though I agree the first one sounds more 说ish than the sencond. My feeling is that this 宁愿...也不... pattern is as much a feature of spoken Chinese as written.

wondering if this 书 is a 说. --For both? The first one sounds a bit more 说-like I guess. I thought maybe Jenny was saying "in writing, we tend to add 也不~ after a 宁愿~", mostly because of the 里面.
Ah right 就用宁愿. Just use 宁愿.
