Flash cards problems

September 26, 2011 at 12:31 AM posted in General DiscussionI am having problems with the flash cards.
1) On my laptop with Firefox (5.0.1) the automatic setting does not work. Well, it does automatically move to next card but it does it immediately, no matter what the time setting is.
2) Flash cards do work in iPad except that it always asks the same card again and again.
Currently only way for me to use the automatic setting in the flash card is to use the iPhone app with iPad. Which by the way sometimes refuses to authenticate itself.
I do find ChinesePod useful, but it seems that almost every week I run into smaller or bigger technical problems :-(

Any idea when the bug will be fixed? It has been now two months and the bug is still there.

Mobile site does not have the "flipping the card automatically" functionality.
I usually go through 100 cards at one time: that would require clicking "flip" button 100 times and "next" button another 100 times.
After working 8+ hours in the office with laptop, I really appreciate the "automatic flip and next" function in the flash cards ;-)

Hi Miskat,
At the moment, there are no new updates. The tech team knows about the problem and has it posted on their project board.
As for the iPad, are you using the regular site or the mobile site? I just tested this out on the mobile site (m.chinesepod.com) and had no issues with the flash cards.

Hi Miskat,
It is definitely a bug, and we'll put it in the queue to be fixed. I'm really sorry that it's taken so long to get to this step. We'll update you when it's fixed.

I just tried the Flash cards with my friends laptop and I have exactly the same problem. (The cards are showing the correct answer most of the time immediately completely ignoring the automatic setting value).
If I am the only one who is having this problem then in some strange reason the bug is somehow related to my account.
One additional question: does the Tools-> Flash cards work properly for other people who are using the web site with iPad? Or does the Flash cards just keep looping one card again and again?
(I am getting pretty tired of the technical issues I am facing with Chinespod.com and the app, especially when the content itself in Chinesepod.com is so great. As a foreigner living in China I get lot of questions from new expats about tools to learn chinese and I used to recommend Chinesepod. But unfortunately lately I have been telling people to look for other alternatives.)

Hi Miskat,
We're still trying to work this out. None of us are entirely sure what is causing this problem for you. We'll let you know as soon as we have something.
Thanks,
JC

Hi! What version of Flash and OS are you using? Also, considering updating to Firefox 6.
With your iPad, try logging out of ChinesePod, then clearing your cache and cookies. Let us know if you're still having issues upon loggin back in.

Hi.
I am quite confused now. I am still having the problem with the Flash Cards tool. It only works properly in the iPhone app in my iPad.
I started using my other laptop that does not even have flash installed but the Flash Cards still works (incorrectly). Then I realized that the Flash Cards is not using flash, it seems to be implemented with java scripts. Which would also explain why the Safari browser in iPad one can see Flash Cards (although it always shows one character again and again).
Am I really the only one who has this problem in IE and Firefox:
- Open Flash Cards
- Set the time out to 5 seconds
- Cards do change in 5 seconds, but most of the cards show the correct answer in immediately or in 1 second.
Problem in iPad Safari browser:
- Open Flash Cards
- You can only see the first card, next card is always the same one

Miskat,
Another suggestion I could make is to update Flash. The current build should be 10.3.183.10. There are some issues with Windows 7 and the build you're currently using.

Hi.
OS is Windows 7 (Version 6.1, Build 7600) and Flash is 10.3.183.5.
IE 9 seems to work slightly better, for few cards it does seem to follow the timer but then it starts showing all of them immediately.
Thanks for the clearing cache and cookies tip, I will try that next I have the login problem.

October 25, 2011 at 11:28 PMHello there Chinesepod tech support. Any comments about this one?
To summarize my problem: Tools->Vocabulary Manager->Flashcard is not working properly in any of my laptops or different browsers. Solution is not to install latest version of Adobe Flash player because the "flashcards" is not implemented by Flash technology.
