I was wondering what is the difference between 群,帮,团 and 组.  Also which ones are measure words and which ones are nouns.  Lastly, what is the most generic way to just say group?

Well, it's a little bit hard to explain. They can use as measure words and nouns both.

I can give you some examples.

一群人 >一帮人>一组人

normally we don't say 一团人

Cathay Financial Holding Company (in Taiwan) is 國泰金融控股股份有限公司 and I think we can shorten "holding company" to 控股公司。

not sure about 团 being used, but I do know that the company I work for just set up a branch company, and the legal term for branch company is called, "分公司" as stated on our business license. And the legal term for a subsidiary company is called "子公司".

I think I got a bit off track from the topic though.. woops.

Jenny, isn't 团 used a lot in a business context, e.g. when referring to a group of companies as in parent company and its subsidiaries? I'm sure I've seen it written in some work documents I was looking at recently.

The most general and commonly used word for "group" is 组. It's used a lot in online context, e.g. join a group, 参加一个组。If you are talking about a group of people, you can say 一群人. 帮 is very casual and it can refer to a criminal gang. 团 is not used often. It's mostly used as part of a noun, e.g. 合唱团 (choir).

The uses here are just as measure words, any examples of nouns? Also what is the meaning different between these, do some signify more people?
