Ipod/iphone app wishlist

Hi Cpod/John B,

I know development is still going on for the iphone/pod app, so I thought I'd just put up a quick wishlist from my point of view as a user that pretty much exclusively learns from the app. They're in no particularly order, I'm kind of just brain dumping in a thread because I keep meaning to but never getting round to it.

1) Deleting downloaded lessons - can't currently do it. Not sure what happens to the downloaded content when you mark it as studied? Does it free up that space?

2) Accessing the community via the app. Would be great  to be able to access a lesson's comments via the app, and even more importantly:

3) Accessing the lessons via the app - huge on my wishlist would be to be able to do my exercises straight in the app. So much more convenient than having to find a computer (or sneak time at work!)

4) SRS in the flashcards - Flashcards without SRS are a little redundant these days. I have hundreds of flashcards, but never really get through them. SRS learning would make them actually useful. There are plenty of open-source engines that could be used?

5) Accessing the lesson list / mark as studied / bookmark - Would be so great if we could really access the entire chinesepod library, even on a keyword search basis from the app. As it is I'm stuck with maybe 10-20 lessons (because every time the app refreshes, I lose a little of the "show more" buffer I've loaded, and the lessons I've still not marked as studied).

6) Longer lesson listings/filter by type - I shudder to think what would happen on a long journey if I really wanted to get down to some study.

7) Multiple download selects - The whole "tap to download" for individual lessons gets really tiring if (like me), you download not just the lesson, but the dialogue and the audio review for each lesson, and you're setting 5-10 lessons to download so you can be set for studying for a whole week.

8) Indicator for lessons with downloaded content - bolded, or shaded to show that you've downloaded this lesson and can listen to it would really help.

9) Inline play controls - If you've set a lesson to play, to have to skip to the controls to press "stop" when you want to pause it is a bit annoying. Is there any reason the play controls couldn't show on the lesson you're playing?

10) Play multiple lessons - Multiple select means the ability to play multiple lessons, which would be great for people like me who listen in the car on the way to and from work. It's not so safe for me to be selecting new lessons while on the move, and this would help me.

11) Offline Sync - If you could do things offline (for ipod users or those out of signal etc) - e.g. mark as studied, do exercises etc, then sync what you've done to the online site when you're next back in signal range. That would be amazing.

Ok, that's enough for now. I find the Cpod app so useful, these things would hopefully make it even more so for me! I do think you get the most use out of it if you're on an iphone so can download on the move - maybe this year if the phone upgrade god is nice to me, I might get there, but in the mean time, it's ipod for me :p

As far as I know the quick review app has been abandoned, so hang on to it if you have it. I think CPod's policy is "if you can still connect to our server with it and it works then good for you, but we aren't promising anything."

As for the version 2.x of the CPod app, I would highly recommend that you read the discussion thread in the "Chinese Pod Mobile Apps" group, because once you get 2.x you won't be able to go back. Most of the major bugs and lack of functionality in the first iteration of 2.x have been ironed out, but you should probably base your decision on how you actually use the product.

I haven't kept up with the tech changes in the apps, so sorry if this question is behind the times, but last I read there was some sort of problem with the latest version of one of the apps [or at least it was the updated version at the time..about a month or so ago]. I think it was the CPod app rather than the Quick review app [is that still being worked on btw?] , right? So I haven't updated it. My version is 1.1.3. I notice there is a version 2.0.4 now. Have the issues been resolved so that I should update to it now, or should I keep the old version? I don't actually use the old one currently but if there is an improved updated version I'd be inclined to check it out.

Oh, and if I go from wishlists to advice (because I'm sure Hank really needs my lame advice, haha), if I were Cpod, I would make the app fully featured, and at that point, I would allow free download by everyone (including non-subscribers), including 10-20 free lessons, then charge a micropayment amount of the 59p/99cent variety for each subsequent download of 10-20 lessons on a structured pathway through the lessons and levels (as well as allowing the traditional subscription model for people who are fully committed to learning). Micropayments, it's the way forward, just look at the top grossing iphone apps and see how many of them are "free" :)

Well they have dabbled a bit, I think. There are some CPod "packs" in the iTunes store. I haven't done the math, but they would have to consider whether they were cannibalizing their existing offerings by selling as you suggest. Users might be confused about which service to take also, and without a clear path to upgrade them they might miss out on the tools for those fully committed to learning. (Not many of us want to admit to anything less. ;)

PS: xiao_liang looks like CPod vaporized the spam-initiated thread -- can't say I blame them.

back to the topic: I have both an iPhone and an iPod Touch running the same OS, but get different results with the CPod app.  In particular, the recent bug fix for seeing more lessons seems to have worked on the iPhone but not the iPod Touch.  On the latter it seems to have replaced the old bug with a new bug, so it fails in a different way -- it shows the next set of lessons for about one second, and then they vanish.  Anybody else seeing this?

thanks. A quick fix for this is to switch the iPod Touch to "Airplane Mode" under settings. Of course once the lesson is selected Airplane Mode has to be switched off in order to download anything, if it has not been done previously.

Yes, I see exactly the same thing, but only when online. As soon as you go offline (out of wireless range), it works properly...

Great suggestions.   I agree, but have not gotten around to writing it up. Please e-mail these to CPod directly, or send it in as a ticket to support.  I don't think anybody in the development team reads these posts any more.

True. I guess I end up using Facebook a lot for work, too, though, so I'm pretty muddy all the time. ;)

Although to be fair, I do try to keep facebook and Cpod separate. It's almost as if, if I've added someone on facebook (because I've met them in real life), that's a different relationship to the one where they work for a service that I pay for :) Gets a bit awkward if you muddy the two.

Sorry guys, you posted this into a group that I wasn't a member of, and I didn't see it. I just happened to catch xiao_liang's post just now in the all conversations feed. I think they're excellent suggestions, and I've added the ones that weren't already on the list of future improvements to that list.

xiao_liang, in the future please feel free to pm me or send me a message on FB. I'm not ignoring you on purpose, I promise! Odds are I just didn't see the message.

Well, that's not entirely true. But if there's no response in a couple of days, I'll send it in :)
