New lessons not feeding into Mobile site

November 01, 2010 at 10:28 AM posted in General DiscussionSorry if this has been discussed before and I've missed it.I've been meaning to ask about this for ages. I'm subscribed to everything, but for some reason the new lessons never feed into my mobile site. I have to go onto the regular site and actually bookmark them. Is anyone else experiencing this? I can't work out if there is some other setting I'm meant to make to avoid this

oops. Sorry RJ. I started a new post so as not to hijack calkins post and went back and deleted my post there. Shortly after doing all this I now notice that you'd replied to me there which I can not view [obviously because I deleted the original comment ] and so can only get this part of your reply from the community page:
"Baba, are you talking about the mobile site or the mobile app? It sounds like you are referring to the app and it only loads lessons that are on your dashboard, so bookmarking would work yes. If you are having touble with this, the best thing to do is to dele..."

RJ,
"Dragging a single lesson has always been available"
..really? Yeah, well that's what you would expect as it works that way for music, and it was the very first thing I tried , but no matter how many times I tried it wouldn't work, so I must have been caught out by a glitch at the time, and I haven't tried it since. Good to know it works now.
"you can set itunes to auto or manual update"
yeah, I have played around with these options
"You dont need them the minute they come out"
..oh yes I do, I have to, I must
"Right now you dont have them at all"
..well, while on my mobile I go to the regular site and bookmark them, and then they are there on the mobile site and I can listen. It just ends up taking about 5 minutes, that's all, but I do get them.
"most of the tricky stuff you can find by searching for it by description"
Yeah, I did a bit of a search at the time and couldn't find anything. Perhaps I didn't look hard enough back then. It's a question of time, if you're initial quick search is fruitless.
"only 8G"
...yeah, well we're now up to lesson 1533 plus there are some other channels not included in that number, and each lesson has 3 files, and then there are all the other Praxis languages which I have and also apps, music, etc. 8G is the smallest capacity iphone, There are 32G and 64G. Not complaining, just saying it won't all fit.
"there is a title search function on your phone for finding lessons"
..good tip. Yeah I've seen the search function, but never used it as I've only got a few lessons on my iphone and not needed it to date.
"there is a way to get wireless connection on your iphone. It has a built in wireless modem"
yeah, from the start of getting my iphone it always automatically connects to my home wifi. I have never had a problem there. I have used McDonalds hot spots and other hot spots in the past but I'm not a fan of it. I have also used an old mobile phone as a modem in the past before my iphone so I think that ability has been around for quite some time.
Thanks mate. :)

Baba,
Dragging a single lesson has always been available.
As for new lessons - you can set itunes to auto or manual update but you have to log in to transfer to your phone, but you can do this from your phone since you have 3G. You probably have to be at a computer to transfer single lessons, dont know, never tried it. Give it a try. I find transferring lessons once a day at home sufficient. You dont need them the minute they come out. Right now you dont have them at all. The iphone manual (on line) is somewhat helpful but most of the tricky stuff you can find by searching for it by description. There are always others that have traveled the path before you and geeks love to share.
You mentioned only 8G. My God, that is a lot. My wife has over 800 lessons on her 8G mp3 player and 1200 pictures and it is not full. There is a title search function on your phone for finding lessons. If you are worried about data transfer rates do it while on wifi at home. Yes, there is a way to get wireless connection on your iphone. It has a built in wireless modem so you can connect at home or at McDonalds or any other "hot spot" that has free internet. When you have toys, you have to play.

shenme? I'm the boy who cried wolf? Nah, that can't be it. What are you trying to tell me? When I new channel comes, no-one [at least to date as far as I know] is automatically subscribed.

RJ,
I didn't know whether podcatcher was a specific brand of rss feed for podcasts or if it was a general term. I've never looked into this much. It was a over 18 months ago, but what you describe about dragging the lesson to your device is exactly what I first tried back then because that's what I could do with music. But for some reason back then it wouldn't with podcasts. I have not looked into it since as I've used a cheap mp3 instead. Glad to know that method works as well now [if it always did then both mine wasn't working for some reason and nor could others including tech tell me . I'd be interested to know when it became available for podcasts].

Its easy to download single lessons. Dont sync. Just plug you iphone in while itunes is open and when the phone shows up as a device, you just drag a lesson there with the mouse. It has always been possible but its not obvious. Im sure there are other ways as well. I wont go into it but I did figure out how to get mp3's saved on my computer to my i-device.
btw- itunes is a "pod catcher". You're messing with me right hehe? I think you know exactly what you are doing. Winding me up you are.

RJ,
I don't have a podcatcher [that I know of, hehe] but actually I do have itunes and the lessons do feed into there. But I have rarely used that to transfer to my ipod or iphone. The reason being is that until only the other day, I could never work out how to individually select lessons for download to my iphone. I only have an 8GB phone, and as I have subscribed to everything including all the other pods, it ends up blowing my data limit on my phone. not to mention that it then could be too hard to find individual lessons. To my joy the other day I stumbled upon a very easy way to individually select podcasts. I don't think it was there before because I asked on the boards including one of the techs here and no-one had a solution. Does anyone know how long this ability has been available? It may have been a while I guess because I rarely to date have used itunes but now that I can do this I may well do this more. I'm not sure how this affects new lessons that come out when I'm out and about.

Baba,
In addition, you should do yourself a favor and set up an I-tunes account and set your RSS feed to take advantage of having the I-phone. This way you can load as many lessons as you like on the phone and listen to them whenever you like, even when there is no wireless or 3G. Why do you think they call it C-POD, with the emphasis on POD? You are cheating yourself if you dont use this feature, having all the tools.
btw-Did the subscription info help you, or are you one of the quirk sufferers?

Baba, if what RJBerki suggests doesn't work (it should, but it might not if you've run afoul of one of the aforementioned quirky feed bugs), you can contact Peter at support@chinesepod.com -- I'll ping him and make sure he's on the lookout for it so he can get you taken care of asap.

Baba
it sounds like your problem is more related to the fact that you are not getting lessons to the dashboard. Open the cog wheel on the home page and subscribe to intermediate. Have you done this?

November 02, 2010 at 01:30 AM
thanks johnb.
Ok, todays lesson is an example. I can see the new intermediate lesson is out, but it's not on my dashboard despite being subscribed to intermediate, so it definitely wont be in my mobile app. Is there some other setting I should use? Also, what is the best way to email Peter?

Hey guys, RJBerki is right, the iPhone app should work over 3G just as well as it works over Wifi (though perhaps a little slower, and if your 3G access is metered then you may need to think about how much data you're transferring across when you download the podcasts).
I just checked out my account on the mobile site, and it seems to be updating fine. Can you pop Peter an email and have him check your account for you? We've been having some really quirky issues with individual user's feeds that we can't replicate with any consistency, so it may be one of those.
Sorry for the inconvenience! :$

well you might be right but I dont see why 3g wouldnt work. Its just another way to access the internet.
John B are you out there?

November 01, 2010 at 01:55 PM
ok, thanks mate. It certainly wasn't the case that you could get it via 3G when it first came out [it had to be wifi], but that may have changed. I'd love it if anyone could tell me either way. Loading at home is generally not such an option for me as the lessons come out in the middle of the day here.

I would think you could also get to the app using 3G. Its just another route to the internet. No, you cant get new material without an internet connection. I load them in the am at home where i have wireless connection to the internet and use it during the day if I choose. Remember I have an itouch, not the phone so I dont have 3G. Perhaps someone who has one can verify. As far as your subscription goes - do your lessons auto load to your dashboard? If so you will see them on mobile site. If not, fix that. Call me and I will splain it to you.

I don't think I'm quite with you. When that 2nd CPod app was brought out, initially it had to be connected by wifi to upload the lessons to it. Are you now saying that if I'm out all day and then in the middle of the day, while I'm out, a new lesson is published and I could access it via this app without being wirelessly connected? With the mobile site I do not need to be wirelessly connected to the internet. I get the internet on my iphone via 3G which is a mobile network, not wifi.
I'm not quite following your 2nd bit either. I'm subscribed to everything. I thought that meant that everything should feed in automatically. I don't do the RSS or podcatcher thing.
Sorry I'm slow on this. I do appreciate you trying to help me. :)

the app doesnt require any different network than the mobile site. You just need internet access. Once I load the mobile app info at home I can also use it away from the network as long as I am viewing something I have preveiously viewed on line.
the lessons shown on the mobile site are those loaded to your dashboard either by bookmark or by subscription. Do you subscribe to lessons that are automatically added to your dashboard and sent RSS to your pod catcher (if you have one, - They make great pets.)?

thanks mate. I was talking about m.chinesepod.com . I don't use the app as it has to be connected to a wireless network, right? I use the mobile site when I'm out to connect using 3G, and the new lessons basically never seem to feed into it for some reason, unless as I said I go onto the regular site and then bookmark them. Weishenme shi zheyang ?

I was asking if you are talking about m.chinesepod.com or the iphone cpod mobile app? The actual mobile site only shows what is on my dashboard in the way of lessons if that helps. Same with the app and problems with the app are best addressed by deleting and re-installing it. Oh, and there were some secret words of wisdom, which now, you will never know.
