just a little thought here if
看了看 means have a little look as does 看看 what would be the more usually used format?
I've heard 想想 in use before and assumed this to be have a little think. Is the verb pattern just shortened by removing the 了in common practice?
The '了' isn't really part of the pattern. It's what happens when you add a '了' to a reduplicated word. You usually stick it in the middle. '了' can have many different meanings, but one of them is similar to the past tense in English. So "我想想": I'll have a think/let me think; "我想了想": I had a think/I thought about it.
You can also stick an '一' in there without it changing much: "我想一想" means pretty much the same thing.
