"The situation at Japan's Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant is still dangerous and the plant is facing the possibility of a second explosion. It appears as though radiation from an explosion at the plant could reach up to 100 kilometers. At present, 50 brave workers continue to pour seawater on the reactors. Because there is an increasing risk of radioactive leakage, Kan Naoto has instructed that the evacuation radius be extended by 30 kilometers. The threat of nuclear radiation is already causing panic among some Tokyo residents, and many have already taken the initiative to leave or send their children away".
Nuclear power has its advantages. Traditional resources are in short supply and they create serious environmental pollution. Nuclear power, on the other hand, is a clean source of energy. Actually, nuclear power plants are very safe. The Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant was built in 1971. When it was originally designed, I imagine they had no idea there would be a level 9 earthquake that would lead to a tsunami.
What do you think - if nuclear radiation is so terrible, why do we build so many nuclear power plants?
"Following the accident in Japan, the voice of opposition to nuclear power is resounding once again. Thousands of Germans have taken to the streets demanding that their government close all nuclear power plants at once."
Our nuclear power plants are all built on the shore as well. What if there's a tsunami here? Won't it be just as dangerous?
"At present, monitoring has shown no abnormal levels of radiation here in China. Currently, experts are stating that radioactive material from the Fukushima nuclear power plant will not have any adverse effects on the health of the Chinese public..."
Whether it is environmentally friendly in the end or not, I still think people will have differing viewpoints. If you view it from the long-term, perhaps it is fairly green; but for the present, it isn't that green. Electric cars don't burn gas, so they are quite green. That's true. There is no engine, no gas tank, no exhaust emission. It has basically zero emissions. But if you consider the effect of the car on the environment, you can't just look at exhaust pipes. Tesla doesn't run on air, it uses electricity. And electricity comes from different fuels: for example, nuclear power, natural gas, and coal, which pollutes the environment the most.
