Spring Festival Couplets
贴春联的时候,最后一个字是第一声或第二声的,贴在左边;最后一个字是第三声或第四声的,贴在右边。右边的是“上联”,左边的是“下联”,先唸上联,再唸下联,最后唸上面那条横幅。
When you are sticking up your spring couplets, if you find that the last character ends in a first or second tone, this should be stuck on the left hand side. If the last character is a third or forth tone, it should be stuck on the right side. The one on the right is the "shang lian - the top line". The one on the left hand side is the "xia lian - the bottom line". You read it from 'top to bottom'. Then you read the one that goes across horizontally.
