January 7, 2010 at 4:47 AMProbably no need to add to Connie's answer but we should just remember, at the top of the lesson Liliana said, then John explained, that what it has to be is a Yes/No question. Therefore, though much of the time they would be ending in 吗 they don't always have to.

My 神秘圣诞老人 in high school one year didn't know (or like) me too well. One morning I opened my desk and found a loaf of dry bread with a tired-looking red ribbon around it. No wrapping, no protective film or paper, nothing to 拆开 (very un-Japanese)! The bread was sitting there among eraser crumbs and loose staples and things like that. I don't remember if I ate it in the end, and I can't even remember who it turned out to be either. Mutual indifference, contrary to the Christmas spirit!
But I'm glad to have been reminded of this custom. Doing little things during those few weeks to surprise, amuse, help and make someone happy without their knowing whom to thank is fun.

January 9, 2010 at 7:32 PMBaba I think your questions are also the answers. 舍不得 is what tells you how the person feels about doing those things. If you hated flying in the sense that you had fear I think you would say 怕 (which is still open to interpretation) or 害怕 (clear) to make yourself understood. With the shoes in this case I think there's more to it than "being loathe to spend money on" a new pair, although that is what it means in the student taking the train home example. I think it's about, well, being loathe to, throw something out when it still has value or use, about being unwasteful, 爱护东西. As we say in Japanese, it's もったいない mottai-nai.
