i guess this might sound mean immediately following the above, but in the right context could you say 过期 to mean "past one's prime"?

February 19, 2009 at 7:47 PMbaobaobardwan--说实话，我是很羡慕你的。 i dreamed of someday writing a poem in Chinese and it never occured to me to do it now. children do learn to express themselves like that and you know how good they are at learning. there's so much freedom and possibility in poetry. 真的了不起！ i think i might suggest to my class that we try poetry writing (though naysaying from people who think we should stick entirely to "实用" lessons is foreseeable). i wonder if there would be demand for a Poetry Writing group. probably need a 老师 for that to be really interesting though.

let me just explain how i dictionary-hopped to get to 借代 jièdài:
i wasn't sure the device was a metaphor but that was the only clue to go by so i looked up metaphor in 英日辞典 and got 隠喩 in-yu (also 暗喩 an-yu), then
went to 日中辞典 for 隠喩 and got 隐喻 yǐnyù，借喻 jièyù, then
looked up 借喻 in 中日辞典 which referred me to the entry 借代 jièdài,
which is 換喩法 in Japanese (i did not know this term, and it doesn't even seem to be listed in the 広辞苑), defined as a figure of speech in which something is expressed by the use of some other closely associated term in its place.
fyi the example they gave is "红领巾参加植树劳动 hónglǐngjīn cānjiā zhíshù láodòng"，the "red neckerchiefs take part in tree-planting activities", 红领巾 refers to the 少年先锋队 shàonián xiānfēngduì, the Young Pioneers (the communist party children's club to groom future party members), obviously because they all wear the red neckerchiefs.
for once, i appreciated electronic dictionaries with their "jump to" functions. i'm still a "real" dictionary snob though!
